"WARNING TO ALL ANGLERS"
After a startling increase over the past few days of recreational anglers being admitted to hospitals in Mission and Abbotsford with serious infections, doctors on duty stated that anglers with any open wounds should use great caution or refrain from standing in - or washing their hands altogether in - any slow moving freshwater. This warning comes after doctors uncovered evidence that two fisherman contracted Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria from washing their dirty hands in seemingly clean freshwater. Doctors have warned that A. Hydrophila bacteria (which comes from human sewage) is present in the Fraser and other local rivers at all times and can cause massive trauma to the human body (i.e., gas bubbles in the musculature, liquefaction of muscle tissue and organs, gangrene, serious infections etc. "If you do have an open wound and wash your hands in water where you happen to be fishing, and you notice any immediate redness or swelling, get to a hospital as soon as you can," doctors warned. This is serious stuff and no joke! One angler I know was admitted to the emergency ward in Abbotsford's MSA Hospital today at 1 o'clock after standing in the Fraser River with an exposed cut on his leg while fishing for sockeye salmon . For the unfortunate but lucky angler, the result will be a week of work missed and the headache of being hooked up to intravenous for four days.

Yeah guys and gals, realize that B.C. has no regulations on raw sewage dumping like we do. All their stuff goes in untreated! It's sick to be up in the Gulf Islands and watch a yacht dump in the straights while you're running downriggers! I'd bet they do the same in their rivers.

I think the same thing happened to me. fishing here in eastern oregon I was wet wadding the last few days and my legs started to really itch but know matter how much I itched it never turned red well only on my arms. but I know it ws the river because I was fine until I started wadding. I now have it in my eyes and it sucks but it is getting better so I think I will wait it out. When the water warms up it is more hospitable to diseases and bacterias.

I hate hospitals

I am planning to head up there this Friday with a friend from Texas. Maybe I better not mention it to him.

I thought I would be immune since I live near the Willamette River and fish it all the time (Portland is famous for their downstream corn-backed brown trout migrations mad ).

Anyway my friend Hog King just sent me this: http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/classes/MB492/hydrophilahayes/ Check out the pictures at the end of the article. eek

I just returned from fishing the Fraser on Monday & Tuesday. I spent at least 8 hours each day up to my knees in the river wearing just sandals. In fact, one foot has a recent puncture wound from stepping on a rusty nail. I had a Tetanus shot last week as a precaution. Feel fine so far, but watching the foot closely. Played racquetball today and no pain.

Not really too worried, I've been through 3 divorces so I can handle just about anything. fight

It's been a common practice for the City of Victoria to dump millions of gallons of raw sewage (screened only!) into the Straight of Juan De Fuca every day. beathead

I've read the article before. I still don't see the reference to raw sewage being dumped in the Fraser. I know that Victoria dumps untreated sewage but it's not on the Fraser. As I said before don't let the facts get in the way.

The largest impact on Georgia Strait of any single pollution source comes from the GVRD, which discharges 72% of total sewage entering the Strait, compared to only 6% from the Victoria area.

"Oh, but at least Vancouver's sewage is treated", you say. Well, not exactly. An awful lot of Vancouver's sewage spills into the harbour before it's ever been near a treatment plant. This happens because of the GVRD's antiquated system of combined sewage overflows (CSOs), in which storm runoff and sewage share the same pipes. On rainy days, the storm drains full up and mix with raw sewage and the whole mess overflows into the shallow waters of Burrard Inlet, False Creek, and the Fraser River - a total of 200 CSO "events" per year, equal to 62 billion litres (enough to fill the 60,000 seat BC Place Stadium 30 times over).

While the GVRD is the only Canadian jurisdiction in Georgia Strait that still has CSOs, the effects are not limited to the Lower mainland. Commercial fishers often report raw sewage fouling their nets. Last summer residents of Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast watched in alarm as a band of raw sewage, 600 feet long by 3 feet wide, rolled onto their beach -complete with tampons, condoms, toilet paper and grey sludge. A couple of days of heavy rain, a southeast gale, the current of the Fraser River, and a high tide -a combination of fairly normal occurrences- had combined to bring the stinking mess to their doorsteps.

Though the GVRD has been studying the problems of CSOs for twenty years, they've been moving at a glacial pace to do anything about it, and in fact, recently removed money from the CSO abatement budget while ordering yet another study.
A little truth on both sides perhaps?

"I still don't see the reference to raw sewage being dumped in the Fraser."

"Aeromonas hydrophila in the Harrison river mortalities could easily have come from the sewage that is being discharged into the river from the town of Harrison. "

I guess you win on a technicality. beathead

If you read above, I fished the Fraser waderless for two days.......I'm fine. Not crazy about all the negative news, but I love BC waters. Especially, the Harrison, fast, clean, clear and full of fish. I'll fish it at least twice this fall for world-class chums and springs. beer

A quote from further down in the same article.

"This isn't just true on our side of the border. In Puget Sound, combined sewage overflows from ten US cities pour untreated sewage into sensitive streambanks and shoreline areas. In over 60% of Puget Sound's estuaries, water quality threatens the health of fish, shellfish or wildlife, primarily due to high fecal coliform counts and toxic metals and chemicals in estuary sediments"

Just FYI
