I was fishing this afternoon at one of my favorite spots in area nine. I had two takes on poppers but couldn't get any hook. Except for a seal. Since it was getting windy I switched over to an epoxy head. After fishing for a while I finally felt the take. I set the hook and it felt big, like thirty pound king big. after about ten second a gray seal pup wheighing about forty pounds or so and his mother popped up. I could see <img border="0" alt="[eat]" title="" src="graemlins/eat.gif" /> my leader going into the fishes mouth. I was in shock. After a minute of looking at eachother in disbelief the seal pup took off. I grabbed my reel trying to break it off. Luckfully the fly just popped out of the seals mouth with no harm done. I've heard of a few people snagging seals but never having one actually bight there lure

I catch them all the time! I use a14' 15wt rod, 80lbs tippet and a 10/0 17" streamer; usually in the coho and blackmouth pattern.

We catch em and use 'em for for bait when trolling for orcas ( see DJfishes2xs' post on orcas). Just use an egg loop with 3" hemp rope to keep 'em on your slaughter house hanging hook and troll the San Juans, cattle point, Vancouver Island, or any where else you see them. Make sure you set the hook and hang on! (make sure you have some bananas on board!)

When I saw this thread I thought for sure it was about smuggling seal fur in to the US from Canada for fly tying.
