Got back friday, one day late because the ferry sold out the last sailing 5 hours ahead of time... if ya gotta be stuck, victoria is the place!
Fishing was great catching was ok. One nice king over 20 in the boat, lost 2 bigger at the boat. a few nice silvers, and lots of humps, some were huge! Also brought back 3 butts, so I didn't head out to neah for the halibut stampeed yesterday.
Was trolling a herring behind a flasher when a school of porpose came in and started thrashing the bait in the area. I was trolling 100 feet down, and my rod buckles... with in 3 seconds half my line was off the reel. I tried to lock down the drag but no go, so I slammed my thumb down on it...BIG MISTAKE! I decided that you cant land a porpose on a light salmon rod.... for that matter a big halibut rod might not be enough! them suckers are fast. finally broke him off when he jumped.
Also had a big school of orca swimming around my boat. got some great pictures of them. It was a fun trip. The people are really nice. Most of the time they wouldn't let me clean my own fish! I think Neah bay is better fishing though!

Try farther south on the West Coast of the Island. I've fished WCVI for years and have had excellent success on Kings and Halibut. Made two trips to the west coast this summer and did great on both trips. Weather and seas are essentilly the same as what you would encounter at Neah Bay.

Elkrun - thanks for the report. I am headed up that way this weekend so was hoping I could pick your brain a bit. The usual questions:
1) What areas do you recommend for the kings. What terminal tackle and what depths?
2) What areas do you recommend for the butts? What terminal tackle?
I just got back from Nootka Sound a week ago and know what worked for us up there, but don't know if its the same setup at Port Hardy. I am particularly intersted in butts since I've already done well on the kings this summer, but have never caught a butt over 10 lbs.

I used a lot of different things. If I were to go back tomorow, I'd use one of those BIG Gibbs spoons at the tackle shop by the quarterdeck motel. The green and white was pretty good, so was the cop car. Duvall point is good... but ask around, and look for boats, there are lots of them around. There was one spot that seemed to put out more big fish, but I cant remember the name. It is the southern most point in the deserters group of islands... lots of boats there. fish right up against shore.
2) What areas do you recommend for the butts? What terminal tackle?
caught all the butts on taylor bank. you'll find it south of the deserters group of islands about 7 miles. move until you find fish, we used herring.

You should be able to catch a few butts if you put in the time. The wind will start blowing at exactly 3pm! You could set your watch by it. The fog came in quickly a couple of times, but it went away just as fast. Nice people, they'll help you out if you ask. have fun.

Get a tide book for there, The best hali fishing is usually at low slack. If you try for salmon, look for cracroft point on a chart, it can be a really good hot spot, usually a first light type of a place

Caught some big butts at Nahwitti Bar west of Port Hardy in '92. Check the charts for distance. Good anchorage at Hope Island ...
