So the bumper boat weekend is getting nearer? laugh

I also heard that this year you can't go fish off the coast and take you fish there like last year, you have to catch them in areas 9, 8-1, 8-2, Snohomish, Skykomish and Stilly Rivers. Area ten might be open too...

You are referring to the "other" derby with the wierd rules that allowed fish from the Cowlitz River to win and the one that sold tickets all weekend so you could go to the Cowlitz or Sekiu and catch a big hawg BEFORE buying a ticket and then bring it in by car and buy a ticket and win. The one with the 4 hour award ceremony and the gigantic bottle neck of boats and people.

This is The Edmonds Coho Derby

This is the one that is fun and gives away as much money as the other one with simpler rules and special emphasis on kids 14 and under. This is the one out of the Edmonds Marina sponsored by the SnoKing Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers....

Grandpa,

I heard a rumor that there's a $200 prize for catching a mystery fish at the Edmonds Coho Derby.

Just what is a mystery fish and how does one go about catching it?

well it does sound very interesting a few questions though about the derby (web page has a lack of info).

1) is it charter or do you bring your own boat?

2) if it is charter must you supply your own fishing gear or is it supplied

3) do they care if it's experienced anglers or is new comers (my nephew) welcome?

thanks for posting info

It is open to all. If you have your owne boat, that is fine, go out on a charter, that is also fine. Fishing off of the edmonds pier is aslo an option. If your on a boat EVERYONE one on that boat must have a ticket. Bring your fish to the weigh in by 2:00 pm and weigh it regarless of size. There is a mystery fish weight that will be between 2-7lbs with a 200.00 prize, so not having the biggest fish doesnt mean your out of the money. Also lots of nice raffle prizes.

Yindyen,

Call All Season Charter @ 425-743-9590. They fish out of Edmonds.

Their charter boats competed in the derby last year. You need to find a boat that will get you back to the dock (at least temporarily) by the 2:00PM weigh-in.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - all gear and bait is supplied

Beginner's Luck definately applies.

We try to design this derby to encourage everyone to participate.

WOW..this ounds like a really fun event! If I bring my little kids ages 5 and 8 can they win anything? Most derbies don't pay much attention to the kids.

yes, the kids can win the grand prize of $ 1,500.00. No age limits except for the the special trophies and prizes for kids under 14 part of the derby. They might loose their amature status if they accept the money laugh but thats a small price to pay for fame.

Tickets are $ 15.00 per person and can be bought at

West Marine Stores - Seattle on Mercer - Shilshole - Bellevue - Everett
Outdoor Emporium Seattle – G.I. Joe’s Northgate and Lynnwood -Ted’s Sporting Goods Lynnwood
Ed’s Surplus Lynnwood - All Season Charters Edmonds Waterfront- Three Rivers Marine Woodinville

The trophys for the derbies are for the first 5 places. These kids will be excited. Don't forget to take kids fishing. They are our next generation of sportsfishers.

Just out of curiosity, why does this derby call for cleaned fish only at the weigh in??

It is simply because the PSA Members who started the derby always gut their fish on the water, so they wanted that rule to get included with the derby?

Sky-Guy,

Yes we do the Edmonds Coho Derby in what I call the "Westport Style" where all fish must be cleaned before weigh-in.

The Port of Edmonds does not allow any fish cleaning within their breakwater.

Also, as you mentioned, everyone goes home with better quality coho meat. In other derbys, folks don't even want to bleed their fish for fear of losing weight.

This year we are already seeing huge Coho being caught into the high teens. Everyone has a shot at the big money and prizes. Tickets are limited and going fast so hurry out this weekend and pick yours up.

Actually, Grandpa, a mutual friend of ours (the guy that never ventures more that a mile from Edmonds) called me with a report last night.

They nailed 4 silvers in the evening ranging from 4 - 8 pounds. Plus a few pinks.

It's really picking up.
