Do the coho have any size to them? All i have gotten are resident silvers in edmonds which were 5-8 pounds.

My wife and I went out yesterday and were extremely surprised when we boated an 18 lb. hooknose in area 8-2.

I still can't believe it!

This may be an early fish but I'd say they are going to be in soon.

What depth/tackle do you guys use to target the larger returning silvers versus the smaller residents or pinks?

I have been picking up lots of small ones at Jeff Head on a green flasher with a small silver hootchie rigged 24" behind and either herring strips or sand shrimp scent. I've been trolling this fast with 50 feet of cable out & a 10lb weight. Also got kings & pinks on this rig on sunday.

For a while I was using a hooded herring behind a fish-flash and a 2.5 oz weight (no downrigger) but I kept losing herring to the small ones and very few actual hookups. More often than not I would discover I had been trolling with an empty hook as the herring had been pulled off by a small fish. When I did manage to hookup on the herring, they were decent fish.

I'm curious what works for others?

This weekend we were actually targeting pinks for the smoker when my wife landed the biggest silver on a 3" pink/chrome spoon 60 ft. down on the rigger in the middle of the channel.

Normally I will target coho with GSB's or cut plug herring but I think when they come in real thick you can catch them on just about anything.

The 2 I kept this weekend were both 26 inches long, and probably just over 6 lbs., but I lost one that was much bigger and had several strong hits.

I was using pretty standard gear: Green or Red hot spot flasher with green spatter back hootchies rigged 30 inches behind the 11" flasher.

No downriggers, just a diver down about 40 to 60 pulls.

A couple weeks ago I was camping between Forks and La Push, fishing for a week. Some guys had boats and where fishing off La Push in the salt. One boat we saw came in with 4 salmon and 6 lings. There where 3 coho and one chinook. ALL THREE COHO WHERE BIGGER THAN THE KING!!!!!! eek eek eek

We where confined to the rivers though and only got 2 around 5 pounds each. rolleyes

My friend fished Edmonds Monday morning,
they got a 9 pounder and 12 pounder. From other reports in the same area, I'd say screw the humpies and target the Coho. Looks like the timing of the Coho Derby this weekend is perfect. beer
