Jerry, please provide some guidance here. My belief is that all topics are fair game as long as the conversation is civil. Am I correct on this?

Yes, we reap what we sow.

If we could just stick to fishing related topics (like other fishing BB's boards do) we wouldn't have this problem.

Instead, we tolerate (actually encourage) those who post NFR crap.

Fishing related posts are FAR from free of mud slinging. You can get called an idiot just as fast if your fish "WRONG" as if you vote Republican.

By the way Slab I thought you said posting and responding to NFR topics on the internet BB's is for LOSERS!!!

Check the record...NFR topics almost always extend to triple digit posts...while fishing topics barely get into double digits.

Grandpa,

You are absolutely correct.

As the old Norwegian saying goes:

"When you argue politics on the internet, even if you win, you're still a loser."

As far as NFR #'s exceeding FR #'s, I pointed that out myself and addressed on that NFR thread about some political candidate. It only proves my point.

No mystery why that happens.

How many times can you answer a question about fishing?

Pink's best
No red
no black
no purple
no green
no blue

Dammit you lunkheads, I said purple.

That's just a biased opinion......pink is best.

I got my info from 63 different sources......red is best.

See what I mean? It just doesn't have the same bob and weave, duck and move kinda thing that political threads do.

Oh I understand now...
hello

BTW... I just had the best week of salmon fishing in my life.

My favorite river finally came up last weekend and It was unbelievable...First three cast 3 silvers I could of had my limit on my first 2 casts but since the majority of these fish are hatchery we were releasing chrome buck silvers looking for hens. A few were pushing the 20# mark. Lets just say the "locals" were not to friendly when they seen us releasing 15# chrome bucks... Oh well! thumbs

Wow, even the moderator's "had enough" thread starts getting pissy. Sheesh.

IMHO, NO topic needs to get nasty. It's simply a matter of not criticising someone because they don't agree, or because they're not presenting an argument the way you think it should be presented.

There really are only three choices that I can see:

1)Self moderation

2)No hot button topics , which COULD include fishing related topics, like how to snag, how to destroy gill nets in the rivers, etc. laugh

3)Heavy handed moderation

Seems like #1 is preferable, but unachievable give the current climate.

As an alternative, other forums have "off topic" forums. Often, popular topics or current events are posted in dedicated forums. Without the benifit of professionals as moderators, the off topic (usually emotionaly charged) threads deteriorate to misinformation campaigns and worse. Without experts to refute BS, a forum takes on a vigilante flavor. IMO, you can solve lots of problems using the "off topic"process. Let everyone know the off thread is moved and to where.

While I would question wether some of the NFR topics would merit staying on a main board, some would. And I hope that because the topic may be uncomfortable for some, if it's fish related, it should be fair game.

Since everyone is also divided on whether or not to allow "political" topics on a fishing board, why not have a separate forum for NFR or Political threads?
When you log in, there is NW Fishing, Fins & Feathers, Lakes, etc.... Maybe that would be the place to put it?
I belong to many boards that are not fishing related (PC building/OC'ing, Music, etc) and they have "Free for all" areas where you can do what you want. The only rule is no threats of a violent nature (serious ones)......

Just a thought.......

Dang. I always miss the good stuff.

So it seems that some feel there are no politics in fishing? That who get's elected at city, county, state and federal levels doesn't have an effect on fishing? Or is it you'd just rather not talk about that side of things and fish until there are no more fish? Would we pretend things like the salmon kill ala this administration didn't happen?
I think the political threads are fun mainly because almost all of the other threads and "ideas" I've heard a million times before. This board would be pretty boring if the main response was "do a search" because most general fishing topics have been hashed ad nauseam and are the same debate they were 30 years ago.

I have long been campaigning for a seperate forum for NFR.

I mean, we segregate river/salt fishing from lake fishing posts, right?

Wouldn't it make sense to get the stuff that has nothing to do with fishing whatsoever off the main board?

I believe we would see a return to civility with a fishing only format.

I guess I kind of got to you when you failed to put up or shot up! Name one thread that I have broken Bob's rules on. If you think that you can find one in over 1250 posts that don't follow Bob's guide lines, I say again, put up or shut up laugh Which one of my posts got to you; was it when I showed you what my income is and you chickened out on yours, or was it just some other issue that you just lacked the knowledge to address the board on? cry cry laugh

Jerry has always watched my threads very closely, and believe me, if I was to brake Bob's rules, he would be jumping all over me. It's really people like you that push people into posting things on this board that really don't need to be on here in the first place. If anyone is pushing the line, your post is right up front. It appears to me that all your trying to do now is to get even for something that was said that you didn't like. cry

I have been posting about many issues over the last three years, and I can't ever remember starting any thread that was not related to fish or fish management. Unlike a few, I have never called another member any type of names except one member a "turkey" and even then when I found out that he was offended, I apologized for that.

So maybe you are the person who should think twice! Its remarks like yours that starts those stupid pi$$ing matches on this board.

Let's see if Jerry really wants this kind of crap to stop or not! Or maybe it's "OK" for a few privileged members to start personal attacks all over again! mad

I just figured it out! All these 'so-called fisherman's' wives, getting tired of their husband's attention lost to this board, are logging on and creating the typical banter any reasonable male would find feminanly repulsive. Why? In hopes that their husband would get sick of the gender bickering one would expect from sixteen year old females. Well, on the one hand it diminishes the possibities of this fishing forum, on the other, it makes you realize that most web-fishermen here pose no impact to any fishery other that of cyber-fishery!

Apparently, Grandpa, you didn't read my literary masterpiece: "The Old Man & the Squid" in the other thread.

Here's a question for you: Is it legal to catch river fish by hand?

I am not sure about immigrants from other countries catching Humpies on the Skykomish by hand..not using a rod and reel. Is that snagging? Or capturing? Good eatin I bet.
