Spent the saturday morning high tide beach fishing and saw about 3 fish for 25 fishermen. Went back for the low tide and saw no fish.

Sunday, fished hard for 6 hours with the downriggers through both the high and the low tide and landed one fish at just over 6 lbs. for the two of us in the boat. VERY SLOW weekend for fishing along the Whidbey side.

I saw very few fish landed in total, but as we were pulling the boat out at keystone around 1:00 there were a few fish showing - too late for us however.

Later that night I heard the gillnetters were out just outside Admirlty Inslet. Does anyone know if commercial boats fish the east end of the straigts? If so, how often and who? confused

I would also be interested in other reports from last weekend in Admirlty.

My guess would be Injins,, or poachers...

I don't think non-treaty gill netters have been allowed in area 9 for years rolleyes

Periwinkle,
I heard the gillnetters were in area 6 - the back side of Point Wilson.

Have no idea if this is accurate, but it could be that the tribe near Sequim has fishing rights near Dungeness spit. ?

Jeff, I fished north of Casey Sat. evening-- two small coho to the beach and three more bites that didn't stick. Fished the same spot Sun am till 9:30 had four bites but none to the beach. Danny's herring was a little large for good bobber fishing. I wasn't patient enough.

Fished the beach at Casey Monday night. Had the same problem as JG with bait size being too big. Had 2 half hearted take downs but no solid hook ups. Tried plug cutting but ended up throwing it off every other cast. Anyone have a good way to hook up plug cuts for casting? Rummaged around in my pack and found a beat up old herring jig. Tied it on under a float and picked up 9 perfect sized baits (small) in about 10 minutes. Bang-bang, 8 & 9 lbdrs right at dark.

Well thanks for the reports JG and Wolverine.

I am no expert at hooking up plug cut herring, but the the most senior herring/bobber guy on the beach at Bush Pt. told me to put the top hook through the spine near the cut-end of the herring.

I'll have to pick up a herring jig!

Bobber Down uses cutplugs alot under the bobber- maybe he will read this. I believe it is really important that both hooks carry the weight of the herring. Wolverine, we must of fished Casey at the same time sometime this year?

JG

I'm certain we've been at Casey at the same time. Fished it every Sat but the last one. Been fishing up there, off and on, for 29 years so I guess I'm an old timer. With the humpers gone the crowds have thinned out nicely. Went up last night and went 2 for 5. Brined up some small frozen herring, and that seemed to work a lot better than the big fresh dead stuff.

I usually fish halfway down the beach in front of the huge log.

We've probably fished next to each other. I usually start just North of the big root wad at the point. I spend a lot of time fishing inside the buzz bombers on the South side of the point. They're tossing buzz bombs as far out as they can, and I'm pulling out fish 30' from the beach. I "chase" the soft water side of new tide rips all around the point. I cast into the fast water side and pull the float back into the seam. then it's " Hey, where'd my bobber go?"

I've seen you down there by the point. I stay near the log and wait for the water to look fishey. Nothing better than pulling an 8lb'er out from beneath the feet of a buzzbomber moose

Thanks for posting a couple pointers during your conversation JG & Wolverine. Glad I came back to this thread before it went to pg. 2, where things get lost for ever

Fished Ft Casey today from 6:30 AM to 2 PM. There was an incoming tide all morning with very little rip formation. Caught nothing but ducks and gulls. There was only about 15 guys fishing so the gulls were really a nuisance. Missed 2 half hearted takedowns and there were only 4 fish caught in the AM. When the tide swung around around 1 PM the rips formed and the bite turned on. Went 4 for 7 in an hour and a half. Tomorrow I'm sleeping in aand not going to show uup so early.
