My New willie DB went to the paint booth today for zolitone and I have a question..
I debated on having them clearcoat it for 250.00..
I would just as soon save a few bucks and do myself. Any feed back on how tough this would be?

To get a good job you need a clean room with good ventilation, and preferably spray equipment. I did a boat in our garage and it came out pretty nice, but not as good as a professional job. The fact that you're asking probably means that you'd be in the same position as me. I used a linear polyurethane finish.

I was perfectly happy with the finish, and never got anything but compliments. But I could tell that a pro job would have been better.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Most of the urethane clear coats use an isocyanate catalyst that will pickle you if you don't have a fresh air respirator. Nasty stuff.

Timberman-
The health concerns associated with isocyanates are serious for the user, but also for anyone else who may come into contact with the product (esp. if you are doing the application in an attached garage)

If you do decide to do the job yourself, and don't have access to a supplied-air respirator system as Dan suggested, get a good air-purifying respirator, and an organic vapor cartridge with a P-100 filter. Also, change the filters frequently, and especially if you begin to taste anything that makes you suspicious.

An industrial safety store in your area, such as cascade airgas, sound safety, or a welding supply shop, should be able to set you up.

Even shops with engineering controls in place to vent the workspace still require the applicator to use respiratory protection. This is obviously a little different, as you are only doing one boat, but be careful.

Also, if you have had respiratory problems in the past, you should check with your doctor before you wear the respirator.

Good Luck,
Jeff
