The bm opener at Kingston might have been chilly and bit windy but the fishing was red hot.
Hit fish immediately with a candlefish dart down 90' at the ferry hole. Kept the first fish at 23'' and then switched to fish for chum but nailed a big bm about 15# instead. The bm were so aggressive in the pocket that I moved out to deep water to keep the commercials company and fish the rips for chums. The chum were running thick with the tide and jumping everywhere. Some herring I had jigged up was the ticket at 30 pulls on a leisurely troll. The dog I ended up keeping was absolutely the best fighting fish I have caught all year and he made that 15# bm seem like a flounder. Screaming runs and an aerial show extraordinaire; what a blast. The good news is it looks like there's a alot of fish heading south if the nets don't get um first.

Speaking of a leisurely troll, something happened to my 9.9 Johnson while I was out there. When I headed back it would die if I tried to throttle up past my troll speed. Any ideas what it could be ? I've eliminated the tank and line as suspects. I'm leaning towards carburation, but maybe someone knows better. Thanks in advance for your input.

Gasket on your fuel filter may be leaking.

Mooch,

Glad ya did good on the salt today, sorry about your kicker problem.

If the plugs are ok, and the fuel system checks out, check the exhaust housing...it could be filling up with carbon from all that trolling.

Thanks for the assistance guys, I appreciate the tips. That exhaust thing would not surprise me now that you mention it. The unit has gotten a lot of use this year. laugh Both are worth checking out for sure.

Sweet fish mooch!

Start with the basics.replace the fuel filter. If you can get her running in the driveway squirt the carb base with wd40 and lisen for a differance in performance.indicates a vacuum leak i.e the feathered friends thoughts.

Primetime is coming here at the end of the month!!Ive got the time do you?

Choke!! Not you Mooch, the motor. I fixed one last year did the same thing. I think the linkage came undone.

Is the ferry hole that area just north of the ferry? We fished there last year around Christmas on the outside edge of a bank that was pretty steep and it seemed to produce a lot of little blackmouth.

I will check with the captain if it might be worth the drive down next weekend instead of Midchannel.

Did you see anyone else doing any good?

I have a 2 stroke 9.9 and had the same problem. Check your plugs, if they are stock, replace them with NGK's. They burn a little hotter. Also, if your plugs were fouled and you have a 2 stroke, mix your fuel 100:1 if you only troll with that motor. It won't hurt your engine and a your plus won't foul up.

My two brothers and I fished in the Kingston Yacht Club derby on Saturday. The chum were thick at PNP we landed three and lost 5-6 more. One guy had a 12lb Silver, but most every fish we saw caught was a Chum. I finished with the 4th place fish in the derby, and my brothers had a 9th and 11th place finish. My brother Bri24 lost a Chum that was at least 15lbs,a fish that was about 6-7lbs bigger than the 9lb 3oz. BM that won the derby.

Vent on the tank could be partially obstructed. Try just opening the filler of the tank and see if the problem disappears.

If the plugs keep fouling, check the thermostat. I had that same problem, put a new thermostat in to replace the one that was stuck open, and viola!! When it doesn't get up to temp, it won't burn clean.

You guys are super. Good suggestions. Thanks for all the help. I'm sure it's got to be one of those things (fingers crossed).

affirmative. outside or inside will often depend on the tide. when its really running in like it was I'll stay to the inside and fish the area like a big back eddy. Of course with the ferry running by there its not exactly a secret spot and its a dead give away when you see charters camped over the spot. Oh ya, there were quite a few out for the derby and I did see a many of them catching fish. but with all the chum passing through, I couldn't tell if they were bm or not. The bm I was catching were on the bottom. Most of the others were trolling.
Maybe MC was off because of the strong tide, pretty exposed out there isn't it? It must have been rough up there. I know I was looking to stay out of the tide and bitter wind. Maybe matsmats or OB would be closer good alternatives for ya in those conditions?

HBP
yeh I was tempted to enter the derby too but I only planned to be out for a couple of hours. Just as well since I had to release a potential winner anyway. frown Man, those chum must have been really stacked up off PNP before the major tide change because they came stormin by AppleTree by 9. Some lucky river's gonna get a bunch of fish. Wonder how long this run is going to last?

ltlCleo,
I'll just have to make the time. wouldn't want to miss all the fun. Keep me posted.
