You will get lots of opinions on this. Mine is that 10 1/2 feet is good. For big rivers, like the Thompson, 12 feet is not too much, and I see Loomis just introduced a 13 foot float rod. But I like the 10 1/2 foot. You need the extra length to keep the line off the water and to allow a fixed float when fishing water up to 10 feet deep. Lamiglads makes several excellent 1 0 1/2 foot float rods. Shimano makes some inexpensive float rods too.

I like longer rods than most guys, I love the Loomis 1474 I'm fishing right now (12'3"). The 1363 is also an excellent rod and is about a foot shorter (11'4").

Like certain other things in life; longer is better! 10-1/2' Shimano for salt water beach fishing with a Abu 6500 Mag X loaded with 30# power pro braid. Currently building a 13-1/2' for my Okuma Inspira spinning reel loaded with 20# braid.

I just bought an All star 10'6" (4-10) and can't wait to test it out. On the other hand, I've used a lamiglas cert. pro 9'6" (6-10) for a while now and absolutely love it. The great thing about the 9'6" rod is the fact that it's extremely versatile. I'll usually use it for both drifting and float fishing. I'd look into the All Star (109 bucks @ sportco). Also, All Star rods have an "over the counter" warranty policy. Sure beats mailing it in and waiting in case the unthinkable happens..... Good luck Cuttie

I use the Lamiglas 9.5 footer. As the fellow above said, it's a versatile rod. I use it mostly for jib and bobber, but I also throw bobber and eggs, or spinners with it. It's caught a lot of fish already, for only being about a year old.

Anything in a 10.5 is a good selection.
The 6500 is a good choice for an all around reel however if you plan on using the rod for many hours a day and can get a way with less line capacity go with the Curado.
A 6500 is very tiring to hold all day long while float fishing.
I have a laminglass G1000 series float rod and have caught hundreds of fish on it, very durable rod.
I also need another float rod, I think I will wait for Rainshadow to come out with the new 51 million modulus rods before purchasing another rod.
Every once in a while I need a bigger heavier rod for drift fishing, sometimes I use a 1265 and it would be nice to have one with a little more sensitivity.

the secret ias this: dont buy a really expensive float and jig rod. you dont need any "feel" to see your float go under or hesitate. it is all in the length. stick with 10' or longer but go with a griggs... the 10'6 is only like 70 bucks and it has outlasted any of my certified pro's or all stars of the same size. and if you break it, it is only 15 bucks to get it replaced with no questions asked
