Last night's Anglers Forum was really informative. Jim Martin, conservation director for Pure Fishing and former Chief of Fisheries at Oregon's Dept of Fish and Wildlife gave a truly inspiring, optimistic, yet realistic pitch for galvanizing support in the fishing, hunting, and environmental community to tackle both global warming and poor land-use practices as the way to preserve and enhance fish and wildlife for generations to come. Check out the NWF's climate change page at http://www.nwf.org/climate

KC Golden from Seattle's "Climate Solutions" offered concrete ways in which we, individually, can begin reducing the risks posed by future global warming while maybe even profiting from new approaches in climate-friendly energy and transportation systems. Check out their web-page at: http://www.climatesolutions.org

My role was to kick things off with a primer on the science of global warming and a brief review of likely impacts in the Northwest. Today's Seattle PI has a really nice article that summarizes those impacts:

So NM is the scientific community now convinced that global warming is for real? If so, what % beleive it is caused by greenhouse gasses and what % beleive it is caused by other factors?

Surecatch, there is an overwhelming scientific consensus that yes, global warming is for real. Two excellent consensus documents that spell out the latest in the science come from (1) the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (http://www.ipcc.ch) and (2) the US National Academy of Sciences -- the National Academy has a very readable report that responds to questions about Climate Change posed by President Bush, it is online at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10139.html?srchtop

You ask what percentage of scientists are for and against the reality of global warming. (my original post put some rough numbers to this, but the fact is I don't know). My impression from the last 10 years traveling in climate research circles is that there is a very small, but very vocal, minority of climate specialists that fall into the category of "global warming skeptics".

Just got back from QFC after reading this. I stocked up on a case of aluminum foil so as the cosmic rays get stronger I can wrap more and more layers of foil around my head to protect me.

Hey Grandpa, I think you're going to need more than aluminum foil. Cosmic radiation is blocked only by lead, so here's what you could do: Go out to the garage and melt down all of your downrigger weights. Pour the liquid into a large iron kettle. Now insert your head. When the molten lead cools you should be sufficiently protected. wink :p laugh j/k

p.s. You may have to shave the moustache first to insure a good tight seal. smile

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Great idea guys but aluminum foil is much lighter. Wouldn't I burn myself if I tried your idea? Oh I get it! You guys are trying to trick me into killing myself. Ol' Grandpa is smarter than that! I'll just pour the lead over my head.

Grandpa,

Be careful not to pour any lead in your ear. I think that's how Hamlet's father was poisoned by lead. While you're at it, beware of Rosencrantz and Gildenstern.

I think I'll dress up like King Claudius and see if Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are really dead.
