I know it's last minute, but what would be a "good " fish finder? On ebay now and am trying to choose. Or, would love advice as to what to get a dad that has everything. Thought about the remote car starter, he doesn't need fishing gear, men are tough! I am hitting the stores in a bit, but would love any advice on the finder, or any ideal gifts a man would want (dad).

I like the Raytheon (Raymarine) models. The L470 is a great tool. Everything you need including power, dual frequency, and the most important, pixel count for clarity. A close second is the Lowrance X-85 for the same reasons.

I've been using a Lowrance X-50 since '84. 3,000 watts and 200 vertical pixels. I've watched a single splitshot bob up-and-down in 100' @ Paulina Lake. Awesome detail. Routinely read 300'+ @ cruise speeds in the sound. Safe-to-say, I'd look @ Lowrance again. Pete

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, a GOD fish finder would be ideal after my last fishing day! But, apparently he is leaving me on my own to find the fish... soooo I just may have to buy a finder for dad.I don't want a real high end or real cheap one, just a basic good finder. We never used one before, but I was out on someones boat with one and it was nice to hear the beeps and to know there actually was fish there (still didn't catch).

I love flounders avatar as well! I've only heard of the fish on the roads and never seen them. You have to admire these fish for having such will in adverse conditions!

I saw an x-91 go for $251. I had one before I went furuno and both cost me plenty, about 450 for the Lowrance.
It saw the that X-91 on ebay, and supposedly it was new in the box. I'd rather have a new X-91 Lowrance for two something then mine for over a grand. Its outstanding but the model # eludes me. I wanted the GPS integration though. I also want a downrigger upgrade. Hmmm.., suitable GPS+sounder+one new Scotty electric.., $???

rolleyes

I like the ones with the most options, i.e. alarms, temp, depth in in 3 or 4 diff units of meas. speed in at least 3 diff units , grey line blue line, 4 or 6 diff. zooms, split screens, color, volume control, lighted , un lighted, 2 or 3 frequencies, distance traveled, interface with radar and gps, battery charge, even had one that played 4 diff. tunes, ( that was the neatest one, alas they quit makin em).

You need all this stuff cause the only fish it's gonna show ya are phantoms, so make sure it paints little fishes on the screen in at least 400 pixtels!

When it's showin ya fish an you ain't catchin em it's nice to look at the pictures!

All the other stuff keeps ya from gettin too bored.

Kiddin aside, there probably isn't a (bad) one out there, just depends on what ya want to spend. The eagle my son got at boater's world is very close to the X-85 I have and it was way cheaper!

I.M.H.O.

wink

Herm - If you don't mind me asking, did you get the Eagle - SeaFinder 320DF? If yes, how long have you used it and are you happy with the results? I'm thinking of getting one myself.

I've had experiences (owned) a couple of Lowrances, Eagles, and Garmins, I think Garmin is the best for the money, I have a 160 I bought new on ebay for less than 150$, far superior to my 400$ Lowrance.

I'd really have to third the Humminbird - they have them on sale at Sportco for under a couple hundred generally, and that's for the nice one with the sidescan sonar and the big screen. And my fish finder shows real fish - got 3 full cards to prove it :p

I have always been a big fan of the Hummingbirds however, I recently switched over to the Lowrance X-15 and there is no looking back now.

Downriggin, what's a really good price? Also, to all others,a lot of info for someone who has only used a finder once. Is it kind of sneaky? Apparently not too sneaky on American Lake as it didn't get me any bites! Usually my dad fishes the surface and I go for the lead line and we see who gets hits. (I think I get bigger trout). But, on Lake Washington a finder could be good as it is sooo big. Anyhow, what is a "good deal" on a used moderate finder? I am an Ebay nut, but so far am just reading as I am trying to learn the good brands. It seems when they bite, they bite, and otherwise they just tease you.
