It was just announced that Jeff Cirillo was traded to the Padres for 3 players (those players have yet to be named).

Cirillo came to the Mariners with a lot of hope...hope that he would continue to play as he had prior...such was not the case.

Will the Mariners EVER find a 3rd baseman that can hit and survive for more than 2 years?

We finally got a left fielder in Randy...now...maybe?

Anyone know who might be considered for the job?

It's looking like we'll have Rich Aurillia at short and Scott Spiezio at third.

I predict Cirillo will hit .300 and drive it 80 runs next year for the Padres. beathead

Is it just me or does anybody else think that Bloomquist could be the everyday 3rd baseman? If they do get Aurillia, I'd rather see Willie at 3b and Spezio splitting between 1st and DH, giving Edgar and olerud days off to keep them fresh for the end run.

Jeff was/is a very good ball player. The unfortunate thing is that his "swing" is a National League swing. Some hitters never can make the transition between the different strike zones. Jeff's failure to hit here was not due to a lack of effort on either his or the Mariner's part. Jeff is a Washington resident and was one long before he moved to the M's. Hopefully he stays in the area. Sometimes things just don't work as planned.

I saw Sweet Lou verbally lay into Jeff several times and I do not think Cirillo is the type to favorably respond to that. He co-holds the major league record for error-less innings at the 90 foot corner and that quite a feat no matter what he does or does not do in the future.

He just lost his confidence . It was compounded by Lou getting on him and then the whole thing going public. We all may be very capable of doing our job but how many of us would perform as well if all our performance stats were in the paper and on the news ? At that level it's 90% in your head as they all have the ability. He will get it back once the expectations are lowered in SD.

People do not realize that the M's performed at their avg ability last year. Meaning based on their individual career stats. A couple of people were slightly over their career numbers and a couple under. I do not see a big change happening this season unless they Gel and the rest of the west is off a bit. You cannot count on them playing above their avg stats although it can happen. The M's have found the magical balance of playing good enough to fill the stands and hoping for a playoff spot. Now all that has to happen is for the stars to line up to have a shot at the WS. The vegass odds usually nail it.

Jeff didn't respond to laid back Bob Melvin either. AL vs NL = 70-100 point drop??? Nahhhhh; especially with a 300 career hitter; just glad he's gone. The real dissapointing thing is, the Ms will still be paying most of what's left on his $15 million dollar contract. Still makes it kind of tough to go after that free-agent horse. Probably why we couldn't sign Tehada.

I like Spezio and Aurilia, but I agree that they aren't a big step up from Willie and Carlos. Ibanez rocks! Tooooooo bad we couldn't get Tehada.

The players that they got for Jeff are journeymen at best. But it will be easier to move them along than it was to move Jeff and that killer salary.

I have to agree with the al-ml comment. There is a big transition that some players have to make and some of them justy dont make it. I believe Cirillo will do great in san diego (he is a great defensive player). Remember the padres brought him up so he will more than likely preform for them. Bloomquist is highly overatted, there is nothing he did last season that some of the other utility players couldn't have done (melvin just happened to like him alot and gave him a little more playing time). I would have love to see Cameron stay (no other defensive CF's in the ML's that is at his age and as good yeah the strikeouts where up but that is mental with him). Now for Garcia, i wont even comment we still need to dangle him a bit. Who we really should have went after was boone's brother aaron. The chemistry would have been great! Everyone wants to talk about his series when he went to the yankees, but hell there are not alot of players that fit into streinbrenner's gameplan (as we see Joe Torre doesn't half the time).

Hatetofishwhatever,

That post reminded me of that Billy Madison speech, after weeding my way through it I felt just a little bit dumber than before.

I will keep my comments to myself on that (as some should do). Out of maybe 15 post on this site that is the 3rd time i have been flamed. It's getting old. I think i am gonna have to agree with you on the last half of your statement!

Just having Everyday Eddy made my Christmas as I can say his name over and over and laugh every time.

The Mariner owners are making money and are very happy. They have a top 5 attendance figure but still want us to believe they are a small market team that can't afford big bucks.

Ya sure, whatever.
