Does anyone use a landing net while wading, bank fishing or float tubing for steelhead/salmon? Is it more practical to just play them out and then grab em'. I was looking at these new collapsible nets that fold up to about 20 inches long by 4 inches wide by 2in thick. The triangular hoop is only 18 in wide by 18 long and the net is only 22 to 24 inches deep. Is that even big/deep enough to be useful?

I would say that about 99% of shorebound steelheading can be done w/o a net. You simply play the fish and then "slide" them up on the beach. It helps if you start to look for your "landing spot" shortly after you hook the fish.

I do take my net to the river sometimes when I am after big kings, and the bank is very steep. Otherwise, it stays on the boat.

Which collapsible net are you considering?

I use a collapsible net while bank fishing. It comes in handy when fishing "cliffy" areas where there is no sloping bank (spiringers on the Wind), and when encountering "hot fish" that are difficult to beach (such as Sockeyes in Alaska).

OregonBankie. I've just been shopping around a little. So far, the most promising thing I've found is a Solvkroken Folding Net. The triangular hoop is 22.5 inches wide and 18.5 inches long. I sure would like to find something portable that would work pretty well. I like to keep my open kayak as uncluttered as possible, ya know? Also, it would be nice because many of the areas I fish have steep banks or thick brush which prevent me from dragging anything up on the beach:) What type do you use?
