Last weekend we did quite well pulling plugs with a 10 1/2 foot 12 - 20 Convergance teamed with a Shimano 4000. (KnucleBuster). Is this type of reel considered a "Centrepin"?

I have seen Winona and Islander reels mentioned. Are these typically used as drift gear? How do they differ from the 4000 or the like?

After all the fun we had last weekend I am considering getting the "little brother" to the 12 -20. Their is an 8 -17 and I believe a smaller shimano, like a 3000 or something. Any input would be appreciated.

I know this is a relatively cheap set up, but I figured I would have enough left in the budget for a Snoopy Rod wink

TIA

Hey GutZ-
I think you could use any centerpin with anti-reverse for that kind of fishing. I have not seen too many other sizes of these reels made for specific types of fishing like that, unless you get into the really expesive machined aluminum alloy reels. I would think you could use either the Daiwa I use or the Shimano and just use a lighter line with the same reel. Lets get out and try it sometime soon.

BTW- GoHarley, if you read this, I found one of your chocolate stout homebrews in my cooler last night and drank it down. OMGGood Stuff Bro!

the kind of reel you are talking about is a "mooching" reel. There is only one size available from shimano, diawa or islander. There is a smaller reel availble up here (canada) called a "SeaKing". These do come in two sizes. One is the same size has the shimano and the other one is smaller , more of a coho reel. Both are made for saltwater use.
