I've heard several stories about a guide boat that was going to fast downriver and hit a log jam Sunday morning throwing 2 of his clients in the trees and 2 in the water.I heard that the guide split his throttle hand open to the wrist. My question, has anyone heard how everyone is doing that were involved? Also does anyone know who the guide was.

It wasn't a guide boat, just some recreational fisherman from Oly, I know one of the passengers who went for a swim. They are very Lucky !!!
I did not here about how or why it happend though, I will find out.

My father-in-law and i put in right behind those dudes on Sun. morning and was only seconds behind them,as he was going down the right hand turn after the launch he was flying into the head of that corner at about 20-25 mph and when we entered the top of the turn he had already struck the trees just seconds before in that sweeping right-hander, we did not notice the actual impact as we were just seconds from entering, at that moment my father-in-law did comment that he thought he was entering that turn a bit to hot, i noticed coolers and debris pitched into water at the exact spot of impact but it did not register in my head as it was still alittle early and was still working off a long night, but then i saw 2 guys laying in the trees, and then my f-in-law yelled out "that guy punched the tree's look for his passengers", there was so much sh$t in the water it was hard to distinguish and we only saw two guys at first and knew there were at least 4 on board so we jammed down to see if we could find anyone we saw 1 guy climbing onto the bank just before the faster water, but if there would have been 1 more he would have gotton sucked in that swirling mess, or was stuck under the boat, Hook-em-Up guide service must have got to see the whole thing as i think they were fishing that 1st hole and was already motoring up to the scene, we could not see the 4th pass, and headed back up to ask for a head count and all were on the bank i guess we did not see one of the guys who was pitched into the trees. we picked up the guy who was about 50 yards down and was pretty shaken-up then picked up the other 3 and gave them a ride back up to the launch, the driver just said the bottom just slid out from underneath him and wham-o, you should have the chunks that were torn into those trees, his hand was cut pretty severely, those guy's were very lucky!!! What a way to start Morning!!

Thanks: Didn't even know there was a boat launch in that area......It is a "WDF public launch"?????

I probably would never use it as I have NO reason to fish that part of the Chehalis River.

i was with Don (hookem up) that day. thanks to all who gave up fishin time to help out. that is a hairy corner for sure. we did get the sled out of the river bout 5 hrs later. Don had it runnin in bout 30 min. we were able to run it back up to launch under its own power. special thanks to Ron Holt and steelhaed slayer and another whos name escapes me. everyone is ok. hard to believe the way that sled went over. i think we need to get a permit to cut that tree and log out of there. Thanks for the replies, I talked to Ron Holt on Thursday and he confirmed everyone was OK and said the boat was totaled. That is a bad corner and those trees he hit were in a bad spot and looked like a freight train went through them.. dam good thing that were no serious injury's!

The cornner below the launch is really not that bad.. The problem was that the boat oprerator had not been though the first rapids before and he took the rapids too fast. The tree does not have to be cut out.. He should have ran it with someone that has been on the river before .. The boat really did not look that bad only a dent in the bow.. must have been some other damage..

OK, now I'm really curious. I've been on several sections of the Chehalis River, but not the area where this occurred. Are there really rapids, as in the white water sense? I've launched and been up and downstream of Doty, Porter, Fuller bridge, and Montesano, but the only rapids I've seen or experienced on the Chehalis River were on a canoe trip through the canyon upstream of Pe Ell. BTW, that is a beautiful stretch and so different from the rest of the river - and not recommended for neophytes. And every bit of the river I've seen around Chehalis and Centralia is flat as a pancake. So please tell me more about this "rapid."

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

The rapids that they are concerned with is just below the skookumchuck..The river splits and the right channel is shallow so everyone runs the left side going down.. It is the first fast water from way above chehalis.. You are right the water between Centralia and Chehalis is flat..

your right fishawk that corner isnt that bad but if that tree wasnt there it would give some one a fightng chance if they blew it in that corner. thats all i was meaning. fish would still lay in that seam, tree or no tree. so what would it reallyy hurt if it was gone. FISHON

Just in case anyone thinks the guide was Ron Holt it was not him, he just happened to know the guy who owns and operated the boat that crashed.

Thanks for clarifying that Scott, Ron is a great Dude and an excellent operator. I am just glad to hear everyone is alright. I guess you should learn the river on your own before taking people.
Peace
