I have always been superstitous when fishing. My friends have a favorite hat they like to wear. When I am fishing on the rivers I love to chew on a cigar. My worst habit is stopping at a bait and tackle store and buy more gear that I "DONT" need. Somehow I have better luck catching fish. When fishing gets tough what do you do??

My Bad Habit is arranging fishing trips for all manner of vague "reasons" -- I need to run the motor, I owe Joe's kid a trip out, the trailer tires have flat spots, I need to go to Possession to train for that big trip up to Critter Cove, I need to go to Critter Cove to train for that big trip up to Alaska, etc., etc.

"I'll be home by noon"
I say it before every trip and I'm always late. I wonder what would happen if I said I would be home by 3:00pm???

I guess my "bad " habit would have to be fishing . I tailor my whole life around what type of fishing is going on around the area. cant build the new deck in April -June because the springers are here , cant do it in August because the fall fish are in the lower Rogue. then there is hunting season , Elk river Chinook, winter steelhead on the Umpqua and Coquille. halfpounders, steelhead and sturgeon on the lower Rogue in February and March ....D'ooohh!! Its April again and I havent started on the new deck yet.... "Honey maybe we should just get a contractor to build our new deck ? " ....Its a good thing my wife understands my habit or I would be divorced by now ... Von Warner

Unfortunately I too have to have a fresh fishin' dip in before I feel fully confident the fish will bite. I also have a night before ritual which includes making sure rod and reel are in perfect working order. It also may include tying up some leaders and checking all of my hooks to see if they have rust on them so I can replace them with new ones. Then I pack everything and put it by the front door. My wife usually gets irritated at me for doing this because I usually don't start until 9 or 10 at night and get to bed about midnight. I don't know why but it happens everytime.

As others have noted above, fishing is my habit. Don't get me wrong, I have others, but a lot of them come directly out of my fishing habit.
I never plan vacations more than two days long without considering where I'm going to fish while I'm there, and if there's something good going on where I'm at, I'll spend one of those two days fishing anyway.
I know chewing tobacco isn't good for you, and I only do it when I fish. However, I can't really be on the river without it. Besides not being good for me, Copenhagen is running damn near $8 a tin these days...it adds up when you fish as much as me. It looks like a few other Cope fans know exactly what I'm talking about...
I never stop for lunch when I fish, unless I'm in a boat so I can eat and fish at the same time, or can stuff food down as I drive from one spot to the next.
Generally, I just don't stop fishing at all when I'm out. If I'm walking from one hole to another, I'll cast as I walk. If I'm going down river, I'll drift fish or float fish. If I'm walking up and it will take more than a minute or two to get there and I'm on the bank, I'll switch over to a spinner so I can throw it up and walk to it as I reel.
Can't catch fish if your line's outta the water!
Fish on...
Todd

With a name like Jerry Garcia, one can only amagine your bad habits. I can't throw rocks though, for I live in a glass house. I'll list one habit. Coppenhagen. Just makes fishing sooooo special!

Stubborness... It seems the worse the catching is, the longer I will stay. I'm more likely to get home at a reasonable hour if I slay them. If the bite is slow, I focus more, eat and drink less, and fish harder. My wife doesnt get it!

I thought this thread was going to be about setting the hook too quick on a surface take or not replacing the leader often enough type stuff. Another one is not lubricating the knot when tightening up.

Aunty, that's the time-tested tradition of pi$$ing up a fish. Usually occurs shortly after the other time-tested tradition of toasting the fish gods That of course reminds me of a story of a day out at Washaway Beach when I for some reason had the hot hand and was slowly filling the boat with big kings for everybody. We had of course been toasting the fish gods religiously. This was resulting in a lot of pi$$ing up of the next fish, which of course hit while I was doing exactly that. It was rainy, windy, and rough and I had just lowered my rainpants when the fish hit. I grabbed my rod (the one with the fish on it) and attempted to run across the deck to get my line around the motor when the fish ran under the boat almost immediately. I tripped on my raingear, and also probably from a combination of rough water, wet deck, and too much fish god toasting, and as I fell on my face my rod (the one with the fish on it) left my hands and went flying over the side Well, my buddy Mike, who was at the motor and hadn't yet reeled in, quickly wrapped his line around my rod (the one with the fish on it) as it went streaking by, managed to snag it, haul it aboard, and handed it to me. I landed that king too. Which resulted in extra fish god toasting, extra fish pi$$ing, and it all kind of degereated from there
