I've arranged to go look at a 16' Wellcraft ($2500) next week - Boat sounds like a good little boat for the price, but I would appreciate input from the board on a couple things.

1. 1986 Sazuki 115 HP outboard. Any experience with older big Sazuki's would be appreciated. Owner says it runs strong as recent as last summer. (has a "trolling" gear he says?)

2. Mid 80's Johnson kicker. Kind of a thow-in, but let me know what you think.

3. '86 16' Wellcraft open bow w/ walkthrough windshield and seating in bow. I am hoping this is the deep V design of the current fisherman models, but we'll see when I get there. The owner states that is is a fairly deep V boat, and it does well in the bay.

What I am NOT looking for is a Bayliner Capri w/ a wellcraft name on it. So any info on the construction of these boats would be appreciated.

I'd like to use this boat around Whidbey - Admiralty Inlet, Midchannel Bank, and Saratoga Passage. Maybe once a year in Sekiu. Is it designed for that type of use?

Thanks for your help!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I fished out of a 17' Wellcraft center console last summer and I thought it was a very stable and well made boat. Wellcraft has a great reputation so the quality is there. They are heavier than most boats their size. I've never owned a Suzi motor, but have had friends rave about them. I have owned Johnson and that's a good trolling motor. The price sounds right and it's definitly not a Bayliner! I guess just see if it fits the bill and make sure there isn't any obvious signs of abuse.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Thanks Capt. Q.

Feel kind of funny fishing for feeback on a $2500 boat, but I don't want this first boat to make a bad impression on the family, so from that standpoint, it very important.

I appreciate your advice

Make sure you launch it and run it!!!!!!!!!

If I had dollar for every guy that said geez it ran perfect when I parked it? I would be very wealthy!

2500 dont do you any good if it dont run and needs looked at or maybe a tune up??? who knows when they are sick sometimes you get off cheap other times its very spendy to correct the problem.

Jeff,

Any boat that old is a potential nightmare, be it Grady White, Bayliner, whatever. Improper care and maintenance can do a boat in, even if the most previous owner took really good care of it. If the boat was mistreated at any point in its history, the resulting insult could fester over subsequent years of excellent care and result in very bad things, like rotted out transom, leaking fuel tank requiring the floor to be pulled up, crapped-up lower/upper hull joint, sensitive wiring, etc., etc.

Consider the $2,500 a down-payment. The question you need to answer for yourself is how much more money are you willing to throw at it. It is not a question of if, but when and how much? Some boats that old are not worth taking for free, if you need to drop $3K on a new transom, $2k on a new floor and stringers, and another $1k on a rebuilt rubrail area.

That doesn't even factor in the engine. Maybe the engine is a gem. Maybe it drops a cylinder your 3rd time out and guess what, nobody has a rebuilt block for it so you are into a new/used outboard.

$15k later, you probably have a real nice boat eek and beathead

Not trying to scare you off, just give the boat a very, very thorough inspection. Tote up all the "little things" that need to be fixed. They add up very quickly. That $40 bilge pump is more like $240 when you factor in the munged-up wiring, no float switch, undersized hose and outlet, etc., etc. Need to replace any canvas or vinyl? Multiply by 3 whatever guesstimate the seller gives you on what it will cost to fix.

BTW, don't rely solely on a marine shop survey -- the last time I tried that I ended up throwing $2k at an engine that the shop assured me was in "excellent" condition.

Boy -
Those are all good points and now I know why I am loosing sleep over this relatively small purchase.

I am joining the owner Tuesday for a test ride on Lk. Stevens, and will have time to give the boat a good once over to get a feel for overall conditon.

I appreciate the advice. I can't let my overwhelming desire to be out fishing in my own boat rush me into a hasty purchase.

Thanks for the reality check Finegrain.

Jeff
