I would like to construct a ghost shrimp pump to catch them as they burrow in the sand. I know that they can be purchased but for some reason I cannot locate them here. If anyone knows the basic materials to build one at home, feel free to send me simple step by step directions,
It basically resembles a siphon.
Thank you in advance.

tube is 2 1/2" pvc, plunger is a raquet ball with a small bolt through it and fender washers on each side tightening the ball to the right size, bolt goes through 3/4 " pvc cap that is attached to 3/4" push rod with a tee on the other end for a handle, 2 1/2 " 90 on the end of the tube with a 2 1/2 X 1 bushing for a handle on the tube, 6" X1" pvc nipple for handle, with a hole drilled in the side of the 90 for the plunger to go through and into the tube. If I was smart enough to post a pic of mine I would. If you have questions , I could answer. Let us know how it works.

Aunty,

How do you use these things? I've dug mine with a clam gun, but I imagine the pump is more effective.

You need to be in an area that is thick with sand shrimp, thick enough that the sand is soft with all the holes. If the sand is hard then the pump gun won't work, you have to use a regular clam gun. What you do is stick about 12" of the tube in the sand, pull up on the plunger, lift the tube out to the side of the hole, push the plunger down dropping all the sand and water next to the hole, put the tube back in the hole and repeat. I will usually pump each hole 5-8 times, it ends up sucking the shrimp from the surrounding holes. I usually get 2-6 shrimp per hole. Where I dig I will get 10 dozen shrimp in about 15 minutes.
