My nephew wants trip out at Westport. He wants a salmon trip on a charter boat. Can some help me out? Who to charter, Where the best location, and the best time to go.
Thanks

Capt. Geoff Grillo of Advantage Charters.
Have never seen his boat come back to port without a full boat limit. Can't say enough about his operation. check out his website for more info - I think it's Advantagecharters.com. King action should be hot all through the open season but if you want kings and silvers go in late August. Either way you'll catch fish.

"Gotta work that bait".

I can tell you who to avoid---Dennis Moss on the Silver Dutchess. His MO is to literally yell at clients until the women are in tears and the men want to throw his @$$ overboard.

The boats listed above are excellent. Skipper Mike Harris on the Fury is awesome, too.

One thing to consider is what size boat you wish to fish on. I prefer the smaller six or 8 man boats. Not as many tangles, less chance of being stuck with 27 drunken frat boys, and a little more personal service (sometimes). I fished of a boat named the Scooter a couple of years back and had a great time. Jenny was the skipper that day and she worked real hard to get us into some nice fish.

Good point, I forgot about that. It has to be a small boat.
It's been 30 years since I been out there.

I went on Advantage Charters last year for my first Westport trip. I don't have much to compare it to, but it's certainly different. You really don't get to play a fish with all the other lines in the water, and as soon as the fish is within reach of the extension handle, it's in the boat and on the deck to check for wild or hatchery. Wild fish get a good toss back and your line is back in the water. The pressure from the customers to limit the boat must get to even the best skippers.

Jeff seemed like a good guy, I think he is a commercial WA crabber in the winter.

Somehow I ended up rebaiting hooks of those around me, because Jeff was driving and the 2 mates were busy with the other sides of the boat.

Next time I'll go on a smaller boat and only put bait on my own hooks.

All in all, it was fun, but all I came back with was one Pink Salmon - argh.

I got a buddy who is planning a post graduation charter party going after rockfish and lingcod. Could someone recommend a charter for taking out about a dozen Missouri folk who would need to be taught how to fish the saltwater species?

I fished the Scooter for bottom fish last year and had a blast. I can't say enough good things about the folks at Deep Sea Charters.

I agree about small boats not being crowded, but I got seasick as a dog and wonder if it would have been better on a longer boat.

What Sol_on_the_Duc says,

I fished with Dennis a couple years ago and couldn't believe the way he treated people, especially a group of kids who had little or no experience, he was constantly yelling at them, watched him jerk rods out of peoples hands numerous times.
I let him know that I thought he left alot to be desired in a charter boat capt. and maybe he ought to look into another career!
His deckhand Mike on the other hand did a hell of a job, helped the kids out alot and appologized for Dennis a couple times.

I deckhand there and if you want a big boat I would go on the Tequila Too. I'm on the Deep Sea boats 95% of the time. We make sure to cover the whole deck. It's a 55' and takes 24 people. During salmon if we are close to our limit we will check to see if there is anyone who hasn't caught one and pull everyone elses lines in and troll lines out each side for the ones who haven't caught one yet so they get the experience of catching one. He makes sure if you're trying all day you get an opportunity to catch one. You need to book in advance Ken books up quick.

If you have never done light tackle Bottom fishing, try the Slammer. It is a blast. He takes 20 but if you have a group of at least 16 he will most of the time book the whole boat for you.

Don will have his new six man boat all ready for salmon. It is called the Mariner. So if you liked the Scooter you lover the Mariner.

Jenny will be running the Scooter during salmon again and Don will be running his new boat.

Hope to see you all out there.

Just wanted to add my two cents on Dennis Moss. Went out with him last year and his demeanor almost ruined the whole trip. Add to that the fact that his boat seemed t be the slowest in the whole fleet. To be avoided if possible.

Ok, looks like my buddy's charter party has been cut down to 6 people. I know there are charter operations that have 6-8 person boats. Would appreciate it if people could give some recommendations.
