I'd like to try my hand at shrimping, but since I'm limited to the pier, the traditional shrimp pot doesn't really suit me. I've seen lots of people out with homemade traps, or wire mesh. Does anyone have any plans for these? And how do you keep starfish out of the traps?

Hi Arklier,

Many years ago I mad a couple of those shrimp "baskets". I don't have plans, but it's pretty easy. Go to the hardware store for the heavy gauge mesh. Cut a square, bring up the sides (you'll need to cut diagonal slits into the square to bring in the sides. Make a lip along the edges. You'll use a bait such as cat food in the center of the pot. Punch holes in the can and secure to the bottom. Lower it off the pier. Check every 15 minutes or so. No way to avoid starfish. I can't remember too much of a problem with them at Edmonds when I shrimped. You'll be getting the small shrimp, not the big ones you find down several hundred feet.

Good luck
