I have an early 80's 7.5 Evinrude. It was used as a rental motor in eastern Wash. at a resort so had had lots of daily use. I've also put a lot of use on it over the past 10 years with very little maintenance. It still starts easy, trolls like a dream but just seems like it only runs at about half speed at full throttle even though both plugs are firing. It is also smoking more. Any suggestions about whether to have it rebuilt ,or should I just unload it for cheap and look for another used motor? thanks in advance

I live in Redmond. What I'm really trying to find out is, does anyone know how much I might be looking at for repair? If it's going to be more than $500, I might be better off getting a newer, less used motor. Since this motor has mega hours on it, am I also looking at other things going bad?

call Norm, what do you have to lose. He help me diagnose my OB problem and gave me instruction on what do do over the phone, I know nothing about doing mechanical work so I brought it in. He is honest and cheap.

I had a similar decision with an 86 Evinrude 8hp. Decided to have the entire lower unit rebuilt. Cost about the same as getting a used one. I figured the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. The motor runs great and now has a rebuilt lower unit. I think the first thing you need to do is spend a little money to have the motor guy tell you what he thinks is going on and what needs to be done to fix it. Then you can make a rational decision.
