Going crabbing in the great bend area friday. Was wondering where the best launch is? Potlatch? or Cushman powerhouse? Never been, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dan

There really isn't a launch for a trailer at Potlatch, you have to have a small boat that you can carry. The powerhouse has a ramp and is not too much farther away. I have done pretty well here.

For other launch sites, check out the thread Great Launch Resource

Actually the launch near the powerhouse is known as the Potlatch launch. It is difficult to launch and trailer your boat there at low tide. You can also launch at Twonoh state park and make the short run to your crabbing grounds although there is some good crabbing right near that launch if you know where to go. Try right in front of the Tahuya river in about 40 to 50 feet of water. I have done very well there in the past. There is also a little marina in Union that has a boat launch and parking is limited but it is a good launch.

Some other things about the launches mentioned. All are bad at low tide, I had to wait for the tide last weekend at Twanoh. But I think this is the best one. And is the only one with a dock, if you need one. Union is closest to Tahuya but limited parking & no dock.

You can launch at the Coleman Powerhouse near Potlach on a minus tide if you have 4 wheel drive. When you get near the bottom of the ramp "dog leg" your trailer away from the wash pile. I like the south side and drive out where the springwater flows. My 22' Intruder launched right in front of a 24' Bayliner that had to wait out the tide 'cause he high centered off the end of the ramp. Always take a look at any ramp before you back down it!

Aunty M,

Launching is the eazy part. The take out can be different with all of the loose gravel. But all my truck has in it is a little 4.9L straight six.

Good fishing,
Hans

Pulled up a dozen crab this morning. 2 females, a couple of males missing pinchers, and my pick of keepers. Pots were in about 80ft. out towards the mouth of the Skok.

Regards,
Hans
