Just got back from Westport, Was able to Get into a few Fish. But for the Most part it was slow and Rough waters, specially crossing the bar. I believe the Fish are still in 200 ft of Water. I was able to get into a Trophy Fish a 55.3 LB King thanks to my Family and specially my Wife with Her Netting Skills. Hopefully the Water and the Fishing will get better.

Good Fishing to All.

Great Job and nice fish......join the club! We have been fishing Westport and boy is fishing tough, we have been getting fish, but they just are not in there thick like up at Lapush-Neah bay. Fished from Daylight till 7 pm on Sunday and our biggest was 16 pounds. These days 10 pounders are keepers, at least in the PM.
BTW, do you know Jerry Peterson?

Hi Steve,

Jerry Peterson does not ring a Bell. Last tuesday was a Hot Day for us, we got into the kings the next day they were Gone.. So they are on the move, I believe the Bulk of the Run is not here yet. Steve what was the Weight on your King , was it 60 ? did you get that at Westport ? we will be at Ilwaco on the 3rd week of August hopefully it will be good...

Good fishing.. Kirk

The reason I asked was that yesterday after fishing there was a note on my truck. It said that he had a friiend that caught a 55 pounder also. Thought it might be the same fish.
My fish weighed 60 pounds, five ounces on Johnnys Seafood markets scale.
Had the same look as yours does, a beautiful, and most likely biggest of my life. It now adorns the wall in my rec room.
I don't get to Ilwaco much, just too far for a one dayer. But I have friends that take their vacations on certain days in August.

Didn't quite break into the over 50 club last year with the 48 but I'll be there this weekend to try again. The fish sure aren't as thick and easy to catch as last year but there are obviously some big ones out there. I hope the water lays down..coast guard shut us down last time out there....they have a hair trigger this year if the water gets even slightly rough.
Hopefully we'll see the 4' swells at 10seconds or better.

Grandpa, yesterday we launched the boat at about 3 am and immediatly headed out for the bar, as we did not want to hit max ebb. Not the smartest thing I have ever done, but we made it through going slowly with just a few slammers. It was rougher than I had imagined it would have been, kinda creepy, must have been the big swells that were around. We hit the fishing grounds at the North bowl and fished for two hours with just a few shakers, decided to move to deeper water and hit a few more. Finally we and another vessel, Relentless, decided to run north to Point Grenville, where some fish had been caught the week earlier, and it was still slow. Finally got a call from my buddy Mark in the Relentless and he said they were catching some hatchery silvers farther north. We ended up going 30 miles north or the harbor, and fishing was not what I called red hot.
If I had my choice and the drive was not so far, I would head to LaPush, where fishing has been great. I said that was my last trip to Westport this year, but I know I will be back in a few weeks. It has to get better, one thing I noticed is that there were a lot less trailers in the lot and not much chatter on 68.
See you there......In search of that elusive fish.

Steve.....We are heading down Friday again to Westport to see if we can break the drought. I check out dock 17 when in the neighborhood but haven't caught you there yet. We have a house in Westport so we stay there..over by the airport. Maybe we'll run into each other down there and you can come visit. Last time out I got the only fish near the beach....in 30ft. It was a nice fish at about 23#. Fun getting a big one in shallow water while holding the rod for a change. I'm gunning for that 62# fish...Looks like the water will flatten out for us..Sounds like you snuck out before the coast guard could turn you around...there is alot of politics going on with the Grays Harbor Coast Guard....shutting down sports fishing when it is really not warranted...we only got 4 hours of fishing in for 3 days last time out couple weekends ago. At 3am you ran the risk of running into one of those million crab pots out on the bar..pretty gutsy.

Beautiful fish. I bet that one left you wanting more. At least that's what it always does to me. I guess that's what keeps us going back. I have to come to the defense of the Coast Guard. They certainly aren't trying to interfere with anyone's fishing. They're simply trying to save some of us from making fatal mistakes. I have crossed the bar at Westport and the Tillamook bar in Oregon hundreds of times. There's been times long ago when I thought the CG was being picky but once I got in those waves and had to negotiate them it totally changed my perspective on what those big bad boys can do. All it takes is one to catch you wrong and it's dunking time. Too many people are willing to chance crossing a bar with steep waves to catch fish. This strategy has killed many people over the years. If it weren't for the CG patrolling and closing the bars when they're unsafe we would see alot more recreational fisherman dead. Just last year I think at least 15 people were killed in several incidents of bar crossings in Wash and Ore.

The fish looks beautiful in both shots, I guess what justs looks weird in the first photo is how effortlessly he's holding a 50+ lb fish, he's probably a stout guy, but most people would show a little more strain holding that big a fish up. Like I said prob just me. Great catch none the less.
