The way the river is looking right now, I don't think anyone is going to be fishing for anything for a few days.

The 10:15 update from USGS showed the Skagit (at Concrete) to be running at 29,000 C.F.S., and I can see that it is closer to 23' than the 21'6" the USGS shows.

This really sucks...the Kings have been spawning across the river from us for the last 2 weeks, and with the debris that is floating, along with the fast water, it could place those redds in danger of being blown-out.

BTW: Raining hard here right now, and if it keep up it's going to get worse as the runoffs coming down from the N.Cascades get into the river.

Carp.

Mike,

I think the chinook redds will be OK. Redd scour doesn't get serious until about 40 kcfs or greater.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Yes, even year humpies have been in the river for some weeks now. I had a large humpie male jump out of the water in front of me in the Concrete area in August.

If you think even year humpies in the river are strange...that same August day, my wife and I watched a SEAL chasing / feeding on those fish in the Skagit above Concrete! I didn't think seals swam up the river that far!

When I used to guide in AK on the Alagnak we had odd year humbies, which above the Aleutians is the same as our even year runs. There were so damn many of them and we'd avoid them as a pest not a target species. The really weird thing about these fish was that they were only about 14" to 18" long on average, some even much smaller. A "sail fish" that's slightly larger than an average lake trout is really quite funny looking. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of the even year fish on the Skagit and other NW rivers were nearly as small we just don't usually see them.

TT:

SEAL?

There are a few big Otter that hang around here, but I've never seen or heard a seal.

Not that it didn't happen, mind you, but yeah, that would be strange! T'wood be a cool sight to see...until he started eating all the fish!

Seal? Oh yeah, I've seen em in the lower Hoh, much farther upstream than I ever thought they would venture!
