I am new to the area, but I have fished up here alot. I would like to explore southern washington, but I don't know where to start...any tips on rivers and times to fish for those winter steelies would be much appreciated.

Cowlitz, Kalama, & Lewis (North to South) are probably the places you will see more fishermen and can accelerate your learning. There are others, but I won't share them here.
These 3 are great fishing rivers & great catching rivers.

It's been awhile but we used to fish the Sandy.
I have no idea what it is like now.

These 3 are great fishing rivers & great catching rivers. thanks you, and I respect your privacy. Could you please tell me where on the Lewis or Cowlitz would be a good bet for fly fishing? I fished the E. Lewis last year, but I couldn't find water suited for a fly. Thanks again, Mandinga

CM, I would suggest the Kalama for a fly fisher. There is some fly only water on the Kalama during certain times of year. Certainly it is a river that is much more manageable for the average fly angler from the bank.

Last time I went searching for some fly water I got really lost in the backwoods of washington...Do you have any specific spots in mind...anything that I can go into a fly shop and ask for directions and/or look it up on a map would be really helpful... good karma to you...

Since your'e from Portland, Give the Clackamas a try or the Sandy. Even Eagle Creek. I've only fished the Clackamas once and that was with guide David Johnson.

For fly fishing I would recomend the Deschutes. Its got the best fly water in the area if not the whole state.

CM, I would call these guys, Rob Orzel (the owner) is a flyfishing guide on the Kalama and an all around good guy. My best recommendation would be to hire him for a day.
Contact Pritchards Western Angler at (360)673-4690.
