Someone was asking about catching snoho coho on another thread. Here is a photo from this morning. You be the judge!

I agree that the bite is fickle, but you are not going to catch them unless you get out there!

Three top methods.
1. Dick nite in size 1 or "wee". Casting the spoon in softwatrer areas.
2. Casting plugs such as fatfish or brads wiggler in green or red colors.
3. Trolling soft water areas UP STREAM with the same plugs as above.

Nice pic! Question though for anybody who cares to answer: I've noticed that on the Dick Nite spoons, the stock hooks are pretty small and weak. Do you guys switch them out? And if so, do you replace them with the same size siwash?

You do not need to switch out the hooks on these dick nites. They are small but stronger than you might think. I've caught coho to 21.5 lbs on them fished right out of the package!

So I had a quick question for you east side of the water fishers, I have never fished the Snohomish system and am not sure on the hatchery/wild fish situation on that system.
I'm certainly not flaming, so please do not get the wrong idea. How strong is the wild run in that system? It appears all but 1 or maybe two of those fish are unclipped, is the wild component that strong throughout the system? Is there a tribal/coop hatchery that does not clip? Certainly if the wild run is that strong, then I see no problem keeping them, just curious.

Nice pics, hope to get a few for me tomorrow.

Here are the estimates from WDFW:

http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/fish/northfalcon/coho.htm

Looks like the Snohomish has 11,000 hatchery and 192,000 wild returners projected.

Healthy? Not sure what defines healthy.

NEN- The snohomish has a huge population of wild fish as well as a ton of unclipped hatchery fish! Just go up to the wallace hatchery and you will see that there is probably more unclipped hatchery fish than clipped.

Thanks for the Info. Sounds like there is almost 18 wild fish to every hatchery. So 1 in 12 ain't bad. Kinda makes you wonder why they are raising hatchery coho when there are that many wild fish already.

Thanks again,

The stock Dick Nite hooks are sh!t.

You can land a big fish on one if you are in a sled on the Snohomish, but if you hook one off the bank of the Satsop, that fish is going to destroy that wimpy-ass hook.

I switch them out with these fly hook I pilfer from my step-dad. They're small and light but much stronger than the factory Dick Nite hooks. It takes a small, light hook for the spoon to have proper action, so you can't use some big Gammy siwash.
