I was 5 years old last time that mountain popped. Just a short time now for round 2

Please be careful in the vicinity of Mt. St. Helens. It WILL HAPPEN AGAIN SOON!

Was anyone in the area of Concrete or upriver from there tonight?

I was down fishing, and about 5:50 I heard the BIGGEST explosion I have ever heard.

VAAAAAAAAVVVVVOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!

I have been in thunderstorms in texas where the thunder clapped right on top of me...but it wasn't this loud. Sounded like the top of Sauk Mtn. was blowing off!

Guess it wasn't St. Helens, but a neighbor who lived here when St. Helens blew last time said that is what it sounded like.

Still don't know what it was...but it scared the heck oughta me. Only thing I can figure is the road construction crews blew off the side of a mtn. somewhere around Rockport or Marblemount. The boom echoed for a couple minutes, so I figure it was up the canyon a ways.

Mike you probably heard one of Whidbey NAS's finest flying over.

I remember 5/18/80 clearly. I was on Cherry Crest hill in Bellevue above the 124th entrance onto 522, and could see the plume clear as day. The whole freeway stopped to check it out.

The coming eruption could look like this:

or like this!

Ya just never know!

I was jigging Kings off the tip of Ediz Hook when she blew last. My fishing partner said, "What's that?"

I said, "I don't know.....sounds like Seattle is getting bombed."

I don't remember how we made out that day, but whatever it was, it was a helluva lot better than Harry Truman.

I was close enough to see the lightning out of the ash plume during the May 18 eruption. I was 7 yrs old and was so scared that I couldnt stop shaking.

I was sleeping off a college kid party in my VW van on Camano Island. It sounded like someone bouncing tennis balls off my roof.

We all got up and turned on the TV to ooh and ahh along with Jeanne Enerson (sic).

"Awesome!"

I was fishing the N fork Toutle in Kidd Valley 2 weekends before she blew. I still miss that fishing hole. I was living in Kirkland at the time, and the day she blew I was washing the salt off my boat from the previous days fishing trip. I had the stereo on and didn't hear a thing. A neighbor walked over and said that St Helen's blew her top. After I finished cleaning the boat I turned on the tube and watched the video clip of the wall of hot mud and debris going under the I-5 bridge over the Toutle. Not an easy sight to forget.

This is an interesting event. Stay tuned to the evening news. What perked my attention was how the jist of the story has changed over the last week. It went from a predicted "simple steam explosion" to "the likelihood of an eruption that may or may not be significant".

Regardless, be aware and stay out of the area until we know what unfolds. The 57 people who died in 1980 "didn't think a major eruption was likely" either.

Food for thought!

Ruined my 8 yr old birthday party in Tri-Cities. Was supposed to take all the boys from class (15-20) fishin on the Yakima and a spend -the night. Nobody showed. It really sucked. It got really dark around 9-10am and the clouds looked like waves on the ocean. We collected a 5lb bucket of ash. You can still see the ash layer on some eastern washington roadsides where the ditches are.

I was in the tri-cities and heard a faint boom but didn't think much about it. Then heard rumor that dust was coming down in West Richland but didn't believe it. Then saw the sky and believed it.

I was watching TV in Pasco, WA. I was 7 years old. We lived right next to the highway, and just thought it was a car crash. Then it got dark. As a 7 year old it was great no school the next 2 days. Still have a 5 gallon bucket in my parents shed full of ash.

Wierd thing is I was on the Lewis in the upper river tonight and prfctdrift and I heard the same explosion at somewhere around 5:30 or so... We thought maybe it was the mountain too. But to know you heard it that far away can't be a coincidence....

LOL! Nope...I believe it was one of Whidbey's finest doing some advertising for the Mach speeds..:-)

Never saw anything in the papers about an explosion, or demolition on Hwy. 20, so that's about all that's left.

I'm sure they chewed the pilot's arse...they aren't allowed to go over Mach .9 when over land.

On May 18, 1980 my dog woke me up a little after 8:00 am in my Cherry Crest bedroom. I didn't think anything of it until I turned on the Mariner game a couple of hours later and thus saw it on tv. By mid afternoon it had become a beautifully clear and calm day. When people talk of "earthquake weather" I think of that day. We all walked to the bottom of the hill to where Sky-Guy was as this provided the best view. Sure enough, clear as day, just behind Mt Rainier was a mountain blowing up! I watched a couple of more eruptions from that same spot and even got "ashed," on Anderson Island one morning. This was all pretty exciting for a 14 year old. Even now I'm sort of rooting for her to BLOW big time .

Sorry Toutle fans.

That damn thing popped off daily for 10 plus years and nobody cared. Now it burps a little steam and its national news. Go figure!
My dad and I were getting ready to go down to the 108 bridge on the cowlitz to go fishing, because he wound up not working that day, he was a log truck driver for Champion and the yarder broke. Its the one everyone in the world saw all burned up in the blowdown. Spooky stuff
