My wife, Doris, finally got her first salmon. She fished last year, twice, from the boat out at Shilshole, but she has a very sensitive inner-ear and had to go back after about 15 min., both times.

She has fished a dozen times with me here on the river, and last night she finally hooked into and landed a Coho.


I had caught one earlier in the evening, and had her using the same spoon I did to catch mine. It was getting to where I felt guilty for catching a fish...no more!



I was fishing about 20 yds. away from her, and saw her rod tip plunge as she was slowly reeling the spoon back in. Before I said a thing, she ripped a good hook-set into the fish, and proceeded to do a great job of handling the rod while the fish made a couple runs. A few minutes later, she brought it to the beach where a good dose of "wood shampoo" was applied. She is most pleased, to say the least!

We picked up 2 nice hens last night, mine slightly larger than the one she got.

FWIW, MM, you're right, but I don't think it needed to be said.

I think it can be about both Monkey, fishing and then occasionallyhaving some great fish to eat.

Mrs. B looks thrilled and that is what it is all about. Nice fish! None of my business but I wonder if she has now caught the fishing fever? You know, asking you when you'll be going the next time. Hope so. I should be so fortunate.

Gary: Plenty of bright fish left, and I expect we will continue to see bright ones through the end of the year, although fewer as time wears on.

Someone (post deleted?) commented earlier that "I" thought it was all about killing a fish and having the meat. I guess one could infer that from my comment made by the pic of the fillets.

Guys, it was an off-the-cuff comment, and certainly not representative of how I feel about fishing. Good grief! For those of you that have fished with me, or know me, there are few people that spend more time on the river, and catch less fish, than I do. Hell, my favorite comment is often: "Fishings great, catchings lousy...so what?"

Spent 4 hrs. in the wet and cold this evening, and came home with one (1) slightly red hen of about 9 lbs. She will smoke up well.

During that 4 hrs. I counted 4 different bald eagles, an osprey that picked up a dang nice fish of his own, several herons, and countless other birds. The clouds are sitting on the hills...and there is no doubt that our Creator is an artist.

So, for those who judged me as a meat fisherman only, based on such a small comment....

FishNDoc: Yep...I use that fillet method you showed us on pretty much all the fish now, save the smokers.

Very nice. Silvers can be tough in the river. It's hard to find a lady who appreciates river fishing.

I see that maribumonkey's post is gone, strange.

Cupo: She just loves to fish.

Until she married me (our 2nd anniversary was 10/4 of this year) she had not fished since she was a kid. Her "GOAL" is to catch a halibut...but with her touchy stomach (and some very bad results if she...ahhh...tosses her cookies (due to surgeries she had to have) I don't know if she can ever handle the salt water long enough to hook and land one.

Jerry: Yeah..I noticed that before I wrote the reponse. Still, I didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression. Must be because it's an election year...everything gets blown way out of context. (BTW: Those chines went on perfect, and look awesome! All covered with epoxy now. Many thanks.,.the first open seat in that boat is yours, anytime you want it.)

B-Run: She is a floor manager at Northern Sales in Mt. Vernon, and can get all the fishieng gear (including fishing clothes) she wants cheaper than most folks can...
(If she and I got all the goodies we wanted she would never get a paycheck!)

I could rant and rave about my frustrations towards what I see on the rivers and even what I read in some posts on different forums as a defense for what I wrote BUT that's no reason for me to question your fishing motives from one brief statement in your post. I will pledge to be a better Piscatorial Citizen and channel my frustration to more positive efforts.
