Anyone been out yet?

Making my first squid sojourn of the year at the Elliott Bay Public Fishing Pier tonight...cold and clear, weather is perfect. Hopefully the squidgies will cooperate.

Any reports? We should be there from around 7 or 7:30 pm til 10 or 10:30, if anyone wants to join in or just come stare at the spectacle that is squid jigging.

Fish on...

Todd

Todd- If you can score a glowstick or two, I hear they work really well as an attractant. Crack 'em dangle them a foot off the water tied up with some mono. Easier than rigging up electric lights or dropping a lantern down to increase your "hookups"

I'd be down to go with you next week, don't have time this week.

Been very slow this year downtown. Plenty of folks out but very little action.

I have a Hmong contact that has 20 people in his family our squidding every night possible. He reports that it was red hot about a month ago and has since died off. The squid where real big as well.

Squidding, not tried that before but sounds like fun! Anyone ever tried off Point White peir on Bainbridge Island? If not are there any reasons why they wouldn't be out there? Guessing I can use my standard medium action rod with a squid jig, a big flashlight and a warm coat! Also guessing that once they are cleaned they are fine to freeze for later use?

Might give it a try tonight!

Cool, guys, I'll post a report and see about getting out again soon...

alec,

Pretty much every pier will work...

Ryley,

Glow sticks help, but halogen lights are about ten times as good. At the Elliott Bay Pier, they have electrical outlets, so the genny isn't necessary unless the circuit breaker trips.

Oh, and Kid Floss will be joining me...I've got the poaching hotline set on speed dial on my cell phone if I see anymore of his snaggin' going on!

Fish on...

Todd

P.S. If things are decent, I plan on going out on Friday, too.

Hmmmm. According to these posts, squidding is cold, has slow catch rates this year, and even when you get one, it might do that to you. I might just stay home for this fishery. That is an amazing picture.

Okay so my interest is now fully engaged and it has got me thinking...

When you catch one of the slippery wee things, how do you put it out of its misery? IS there anyhing to hit with your priest or do you just leave it to mother nature?

Wow! Never knew that the squid were that big that people catch. Thought they were only about 6" or so.

I've done a fair amount of squiding at pier 67 and never seen one that size. They're mostly 6-12 inches in length. What an amazing picture. Perfect timing...dead on aim!!! Grounds for filing an assault report!!

That squid in the picture is HUGE! Was that picture taken locally? Squidding sounds like fun but that guy needs a chair, bullwhip and 38 cal. revolver! At least turn that yellow slicker around backwards

We have the same problem with Squid as we do with clams here in Idaho. Whenever we go after them we get skunked. But hey, catching a mess of crabs is easy if you hang out in the right places...

We started out at the Elliott Bay Public Fishing Pier (Pier 86) at about 8pm...

Squidding was pretty slow, and the squid seemed a bit on the small side. About 9:15 or so the circuit breaker tripped, so all the lights went out.

Not wanting to walk the 1/3 of a mile back to the truck, and then back, with my generator, since the squidding was pretty slow, I took off.

Ended up with about ten or so from there...

After a bite to eat, I drove out to Seacrest Pier in West Seattle, where squidding seemed a little on the slow side, too. I arrived there around 11:15 or so...

At about 12:45, it picked up, and pretty much got two every three casts until 1:30, when the genny ran out of gas.

Ended up with a total of about 40...maybe 3/4 of a limit or so.

Definitely worth going out, but only because I stayed really late.

I heard at both places that squidding has been more productive earlier in the day, say 4 to 6 pm, but that may be because of the tides. It was low tide when I started, and when the tide was moving steadily in, that's when it really improved.

I think I'll probably go back out on Friday afternoon and give it another shot...

Fish on...

Todd

Todd, do you guys just use the little green glow bodied jigs with the basket like needles on the bottom? I am very interested in trying this fishery but no very little about it.

Go to Sportco. They have (or used to have) jigs behind the fishing counter. Just ask one of the guys there and they pull the box out for you. They are the homemade looking ones.

I went out last night. Cold and wet. Gotta love it. Only managed a dozen or so but we got there about a half an hour after high tide. People were leaving with pretty good amounts as we were coming though. Gonna try about an hour before high tide tomorrow.

Is there decent squidding at the Les Davis pier? I will go inquire at Sportco and see what they have. Thanks.

Cutty, yes they do get them at Les Davis. Also Dash Point and sometimes the Point Defiance Boathouse pier. Get 'em also at Des Moines pier and Redondo.

Amazing.

He bagged out on (never returned my calls or emails) me of a confirmed spot with Robbin this November. He's on my Shiat List at the moment.

Parker,

The Kid and I have done a few fishing trips this fall, and one squid trip. We didn't hook up last night for squidding, as I was hoping, though...

Fish on...

Todd

P.S. Squidding was very good last night...bucketed about 3/4 of a limit and had to leave at 11pm...and it was really heating up when I left.

Thinking about trying Squidding for the first time this weekend maybe tomorrow night. Do you hit it 1 hr before the high and fish through it? Also is there any luck at the Mukulteo or Edmonds peirs?
Thanks,
Steve

Edmonds yes for sure, but I've never heard much about Muk. Ideally, hit it a couple hours before and fish through the high, but it can be good on other phases.

My favorite mooching rod is a YELLOW custom made by Walt Flint For (William Blodget of Browns Point Wa.) fiberglass rod 8.6' and fairly stiff and with a consistant action, capable of mooching in up to 180 ft. in approx. 1+ kt. of current with feel.
