I'm taking my 7yr old out fishing Friday and want to get him into some chum for reliable action. I was thinking about the mouth of a creek stacked with chum and fishing it from a boat in the salt. What would you suggest for the end of my line. Jigs under a float, anchovies, something else?

I used a float/herring last week with good success. Use a short leader.

If you are going to Hoodsport the hardware store near the hatchery sells a green fly that works pretty well. Otherwise I would go with a green cheater, just green yarn (small amount) and just drift through the schools.

If you are going out on the Sound then I would check out Salmon University's web site,
salmonuniversity.com. They have some techniques posted there for Chum on the salt.

In the river I use a purple and black maribou jig. Using that jig is the most successful tefchnique I have found to consistently hook chums in the mouth while on the river. I don't know why it wouldn't work under a float out at Hoodsport. Although I have not fished there for a while, I bet it would work if you let it drift through the schools.

Good luck!

Dark pink jig under a float tipped with prawn/shrimp. Go barbless and release a bunch! Keep a couple of chromers for the smoker and take some pics! Good luck!

I agree with SP on the pink jig too. Never thought to add shrimp though for Chums. I am touting the purple jig now because of it's success on the Vedder a couple of weeks ago.
