Hi there! I am going to give steelhead fishing a try for the first time this winter, hopefully on either the Green or Puyallup River.

What I would like to know is:

1) Are both or either of these rivers having runs going through now or would I be wasting my time at this point in the season? If these rivers aren't good choices, what other rivers would you recommend in the Seattle/Tacoma are trying?

2) I plan to use a Lamiglas Norwest Special (I bought it from some one who stopped fishing) matched up with a Curado 201BSF. Is this a good rod to fish spoons and corkies? Please forgive me! I'm a bass angler and I'm going into this solo! \:D

Any and all input is greatly appreciated by this virgin steelie angler. Thank you. I can't wait to give this a try!

Very Respectfully,

IslandTrucha

Your set up sounds fine,is the rod rated for 8-12 or 10-20?Both will work.Hope you have some time.It takes the average person up to seven years to get there first one.Oh wait that was pre-internet day's it may take only one to two years now.The green / puyallup are good starters but don't produce like they once did years ago.Good luck,

Try to get down to the puyallup now, water is low and its a great time to explore and learn a piece of water. Look for some bank hugging channels, these will provide a great start as the season progresses. There are a few nice silvers being caught here and there, and you can break a cherry on some tough ol' chums.

GOOD LUCK...........

Island, I was looking at the bottom of your post to see where you live and I'm guessing, south sound area?
I think if I was just starting out steelhead fishing, the first thing I'd get my hands on is the state catch and plant report. From there, I'd pick a river close enough to home that I could focus alot of effort and time to learn very well.
When you're on the river, keep an eye open to what's going on around you and who are the people that are always hooking fish.
These are the folks you want to be nice to and become their friends. (suck up to them)
You may laugh at that last comment, but a very close friend of mine, I met on the river some 20 years ago by shadowing him and letting him teach me the way he fished.
I think you'll cut your learning curve in half if you hook up with the right people. Most guys, and gals will be very helpful if you aproach them in the right way. And it's flattering to most guys when someone gives them respect for their fishing skills.
Oh, and by the way, never wear plaid pants while Steelhead fishing and don't holler
whoooo son when ya hook a fish. LOL
Hope some of this is useful.

StrikeZone, Fishgutz and Charr,

Thank you very much! I will be observant of those I see out there who look like they know what they're doing. I've heard of hallowed rivers like the Sol Duc and Bogachiel but I figure if I'm going to get skunked, I might as well be closer to home. The ride home will be more bearable! \:D

I live in Federal Way which is why I have eyed the Green and the Puyallup Rivers (I can't find a HomePort field in my profile which is why it's blank. There is a "from" field. I inputted Federal Way WA but it still shows up blank).

Well, if you see a short, stocky guy negotiating a birdnest on a Curado, that's me! Thanks again and good fishin'.

Make the drive to the Skykomish. Your chances of hooking up will be much higher there than on the Green or Puyallup.

Islandtrucha,

If you can make it you should go to the January 8th--3 Rivers Marine presentation w/ guest speakers Dave Vedder, Bill Herzog and Nick Amato (see top of Fishing Forum board).
