Three years of sobriety has put mine back in ok shape. Was pretty scarry for a while though. Nothing like the thought of dying from it to make you think about how you treat your body.

I'm on the list for a new one. Old one is kaputtt. It is a bit scary and sad for a lot of you really do abuse your liver and take it for granted but with help from above it won't have a adverse effect in your life. I hope I don't sound like I'm preaching. The Duck

Let me be the first here to encourage all to get tested for Hepatitis-C I did and do. It is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country. Many have it and don't know. If you drink alcohol and have the virus you are causing great damage to your liver. It's not just an IV drug users problem as is widely thought. The virus is ten thousand times more virulent outside the body than is HIV. That means if I poke myself with a fish hook and an hour later you poke yourself with it, you will be infected. Right now I am taking Interferon injections and a host of other meds. If I am luck it will go into remission. If you give blood at a blood bank they test you automatically. The next time you go to the doctor tell him you want to be tested, it may save your life. Better yet go donate blood and save another if you don't test positive.

Duck, I think of you every time I see this subject come up. It is amazing how we abuse ourselves until we get sick. I couldn't believe how sick I got before I quit drinking. Fortunately my liver wasn't too far gone. I pray you find the donor you need.

My doctor told me that drinking alcohol was bad for the liver. So I quit eating the stuff!
P.S. Duc, I hope everything works out for you!

Capt. Don I am also infected with Hep.C but my liver is too far gone for interferon. Doc at UW said if I was to use it now it would kill me. By the way his name Prof. Bruce Tung. I sure don't want to put a damper on this subget but it might help others try a little harder at being more careful on there liver.

Capt.Don I was informed about milkthistle about 6months a go. Brought up at liver transplant class that all future reciepients have to take. Was informed that no test have been done to find out what reaction it has with other drugs. So they advised not to take it. It also read on the bottle "to maintain a healthy liver" In my case there is no heathy liver to treat. Thank you for all the input that you have been giving me. Jim Marquis (The Duck)

People, people, people! If you want info on HCV or general liver health, Try Johns-Hopkins or the CDC websites, not this one. Per Johns-Hopkins, needle stick transmission among healthcare workers is between 3-5%. Milk thistle likely does no harm, but has not been scientifically proven to do anything. How long the virus lives outside the body has not been scientifically established.
Duck, I grew up in Yakima, we might even recognize one another. Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery.
Capt. Dan, How goes the combo therapy? I am considering starting in the near future. I know the side-effects can be rough. what's your experience been like.

First of all let me say that the University of Washington has a study on Milk Thistle RIGHT now. And I have met two people that it reduced their viral load to an undetectable level. So there is some evidence that it DOES work.
I have been on the combination therapy for one month now. I put it of for various reasons. The most significant one was to start a family. Great success there. At first I could not even tell that I took a shot of Interferon, then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt real bad for the next two days after my injection. You just feel like hell. When I went in for my lab tests they discovered that I had reduced my white blood cell count to the bottom of the low range. I started injecting NEUPOGEN to boost white cells and it has gone back up. Today I feel PRETTY GOOD! A welcome relief. The drugs have many side effects, one of them blurry vision, and depression. Honestly, it makes you a little emotional. Some people get real depressed and want to commit suicide. I don't feel that way. They give you Prozac if you do. The main thing I would suggest is to be prepared, and talk about it.
The worst part is giving yourself the shots. It just reminds you of what you are going through, and that it may not even work.
Good luck to you if and when you start your treatment. If their is anything I can do don't hesitate to ask.

Capt. Don -I'm sure I would not like to go through the therapy that you are going through. It is my understanding that therapy is not a option for my liver. Too far gone and must be replaced. Not sure what I'll go through when it comes to anti-rejection drugs, it might not be fun. The Duck
