Personally I do not hold inanimate objects in high regard. I do however hold the ideas which the flag represents in extremely high regard.

As aunty points out, the symbolism in the photograph is that 'America is in distress', which it very much was during the period that book was written and therefore extremely appropriate. Notice its not touching the ground? Its not marred with indelible ink OR poop. Its not raining.

I would say that Bush is honoring the small flag by signing it and not ridiculing or desecrating it and Kerry desecrated it more than once by basically spitting on it after he turned his back on it. To the Kerry lovers I'm sure Bush is desecrating while if Kerry were the signer he would be proving his patriotism.

Cleaver how you throw in the Iwo Jima issue to boost the emotional effect of your argument. When you feel the need to boost your argument in such a way, perhaps you should give pause that maybe you don't really believe too strongly in what you are about to say. Just a thought.
As to your point concerning being offended, I recognize that what is happening is a form of speech that is easily translatable and I will fight and die to protect Kerry's and your right to do so. What about the first amendment don't you understand ??

Maybe you should look at the picture of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima (after 6,821 American Marines, Soldiers and Sailors died to make that possible) and compare it to the photo on the cover of Hanoi John's book 'The New Soldier' before you shed any further light on your knowledge if history.

There no comparision at all there's a big difference between placing the American Flag on a mountian top under fire and a bunch of malcontents displaying the flag in a disrespectful manor. These same clowns advocated the assasination of leaders of this country.
