A spirited debate on presidential politics aboard an Alaska-bound airplane has turned into an international incident, and left a Huntington Station retiree locked up in a Canadian jail on criminal charges, authorities said yesterday.

Michael Husar, 58, was arrested Friday after allegedly having an alcohol-induced bout of air rage aboard a Northwest Airlines flight to Anchorage, which was diverted to Winnipeg, Manitoba, because of the incident.

Husar, a retired registered nurse at the Northport VA Medical Center, faces local Manitoba provincial charges of causing a disturbance and criminal mischief that caused damages over $5,000 Canadian, the latter of which is punishable by two years in prison. He also faces a less serious federal charge of violating federal aeronautics regulations.

"He's mad as hell," said Husar's Canadian attorney, John Corona, adding that Husar plans to sue the airline.

Husar boarded Flight 849 in Minneapolis on his way from New York to visit some friends in Alaska, his wife, Linda, said yesterday. Officials said Husar, a supporter of Sen. John Kerry, was engaged in a discussion on the upcoming presidential election with a woman seated next to him - a President George W. Bush supporter - when she became turned off by his belligerent attitude and complained to the flight staff.

The woman also did not like that Husar would touch her leg and shoulder when he spoke to her, authorities said. Corona said Husar had "had a few drinks."

Russell Ridd, supervising senior crown attorney for the Manitoba Justice Department, said that when flight attendants approached Husar, he became enraged, deliberately spilling a container of alcohol and engaging in "the boisterous behavior of a drunk."

Ridd said the pilot deemed the situation "a minor emergency" and called for an abrupt landing. An armed marshal sat next to Husar until the plane reached a Winnipeg airport, where Husar was kicked off and promptly arrested.

"It strikes me as a bit of an overreaction," said Corona, adding that Husar quickly calmed down on the plane after being reprimanded. "There was no threat or no violence. Certainly nobody was at risk safety-wise."

But Northwest spokesman Thomas Becher said the emergency landing was necessary. "Safety and security is our top priority," he said.

Husar posted $4,300 Canadian bail yesterday on the charges and was free to return home, on several conditions, including that he not fly or possess any alcohol. Corona said the airline is also seeking $10,000 in fuel costs from Husar.

At Husar's home yesterday, his wife said she was very concerned and upset over the incident, adding that she had only heard once from her husband, shortly after he was arrested. Linda Husar said it sounded as if he may "have had a little too much to drink," but she believed authorities overreacted. She said her husband, who worked at the VA hospital for 25 years, is a "very patriotic" Air Force veteran, who's recently been "disappointed" with President Bush. She also said Husar tends to be "animated" in conversations.

"I'm disappointed that his vacation got messed up," she said.

Dream on dude! Is this supposed to be indictment against Kerry supporters or a revelation??? There have been and probably will be many more alcohol induced insidents of misbehavoir on both sides of the isle.

It's those kind of remarks that don't need to be expressed. It hurts our cause and gives the sKerry's and their Ilk ammunition against us. That is exactly the reason why we got AWB in the first place is just because of such remarks. It puts us on the same level with the Bradys, Schulmers, sKerrys and the rest of that crowd and as a firearm owner I want no part of them or their philosophy or their attempts to put further restrictions on us.

sKerry has voted over 50 times to infringe our Second Admendment rights. He has an 100% approval rating from the Brady Bunch (Handgun Control), and every other anti-gun group both Nationally and Internationally including the UN.

What is even more important there is there is the possibility that the POTUS will appoint at least four new judges to the Supreme Court, which could very adversely affect our way of life and what with what I see coming out of the DNC it scares the hell out of me much more so than what I see coming out of RNC not only as far as Gun Control is concerned, but to the very way of life as we have it today.

Of coarse this is not going to affect me as much as it will affect those who are coming up today or in the future as I am on the downhill sside of life , but it still worrys me the direction that sKerry and those of his Ilk want to lead us.

I can see the past actions and records of the sKerrys, Teddy Kennedys, Patti Murrays, Jim McDermiots and their followers and they scare the hell out of me. I don't want any part of them. I have about as much use for them as I have for the bunch of traitors that ran to Canada in the sixities.

Yeah, just like those guys that used family connections to hide in the 'Guard and then couldn't even do that time without question.

Can you show the willingness to infringe upon the 1st amendment that there seems to be for the 2nd? Of course you cannot because most people think that guns kill vs people kill .

It's none of your business where I was on 12/31/1999 - 1/1/2000, but if you must know I was sitting in the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office having coffee with Pete, the Jefferson County Sheriff at the time, manning the JCDEM office along with our Sheriff and the local Director of Emergency Management.

Can you show where anyone is trying to repeal or revoke the 2nd Amendment? Of course you cannot because too many Americans own guns and will not stand to have that right taken away, and will use their First Amendment right to let any administration know that.

Homeowner: 'My Signs Are Going Right Back In The Yard'

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison homeowners are livid after vandals defaced their homes.

Someone burned an 8-foot-by-8-foot Nazi swastika on a home's lawn near where Bush-Cheney signs were posted. The vandals used grass killer to spray the symbol.

Several nearby homes were vandalized -- all were within a two-block radius on the West Side, near Ice Age Trail, News 3 reported.

State Republican Party officials claim it's the latest in a series of desperate acts by Democrats.

Homeowners are angry, but resolute in what they plan to do next.

"I just cannot believe that someone would take the liberty to do this," said homeowner Rob Schaeffer. "We're appalled that someone would choose to destroy our property because they don't believe in our political views. My signs are going right back in the yard. This is my property. We live here. We have rights."

Police are investigating the criminal damage and told the homeowner it will be investigated as a hate crime, which carries stiffer penalties.
