'Osama bin Laden made lives better' That's what the Sen. Patty Murray (the Osama-Mama) said..... Listen to the recording of her saying it : http://www.nethercuttforsenate.com/go.cfm?do=News.View&nid=145 In the wake of 9/11, Sen. Patty Murray said Osama bin Laden's "been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. He's made their lives better. We have not done that."

I have been waiting for that to come up and I am suprised it took so long. It hardly made a ripple here because her buddy Mcdermott had been shooting his pie hole off in the same vain much earlier.

There's that pesky context issue again... huh RB? I believe she was referring to the fact that, in their view, the U.S. government perhaps hadn't done as much for the people of Afghanistan (pre-911) as Osama and his money may have. Unlike Saddam, I don't believe he tortured and killed a lot of his followers. He may even have represented somewhat of a 'Robin Hood' type figure to certain people in the Arab world. She CERTAINLY WAS NOT defending him in any way shape or form. Merely speculating as to why he is more popular in the Islamic world than we are.

4salt, So you believe like Patty Murray that Osama bin Laden enriched the lives of the people of Afghanistan?

You're the 'history guy' Rory... Do a little Googlin' on Osama and Afghanistan in the 80's, when he was our... get this... ALLY in helping Afghanistan defeat the Russian invaders. He IS a despicable murdering villian to most of the world, (including me) but he is also viewed as a hero by some for things other than masterminding 911.

4Salt, Adolf Hitler was viewed 'by some as a hero' for reasons other than starting WWII....would it have been appropriate for a United States Senator to boast about his philanthropy and kindness to group of school children while the ovens still were still warm at Auschwitz?

I agree with salt, Context plays a role here, also you cannot effectivley compare Hitler and Bin Laden. Yeah there both evil, but Hitler destroyed his country and his own people.

Everyone that was interviewed about the meeting at that high school said that she was comparing the two... That woman is a disgrace to this state and to this nation and we have been worse off with her in DC since day 1.

Rory, you said "Adolf Hitler was viewed 'by some as a hero' for reasons other than starting WWII....would it have been appropriate for a United States Senator to boast about his philanthropy and kindness to group of school children while the ovens still were still warm at Auschwitz? "
I think you might find some very interesting reading in the Congressional Record from 1934 - 1938 if you care to look.

If they had been, then anything positive said by an elected US representative about Hitler would have been as disgusting and inappropriate as Sen. Murray's positve comments about Osama bin Laden in the wake of 9/11.

Fair point Rory - and Murray was not talking about the events of 9/11 either. Some context is required.

This is pretty old news. And if you heard the entire speech, or payed attention a year ago, you'd realize that she was pointing out to the audience why the Afghans and Pakistanis are protecting him from being captured. Why do they have such a different view of him than we, as Americans, do? Why can't they see him as the monster we do? Because he has done so much more for them than we have, she pointed out. It's called knowing your enemy. Understanding what you're up against and who your enemy's allies are. Very basic military strategy. Of course Nethercutt wouldn't understand that since he holds military personnel in contempt, anyway. By the way, that last remark is referenced from 18 months ago, so if you weren't paying attention then, I'm not going to school you now. Go google.
