"We eat better" Hmmm, I do love our seafood, but in general, the food is way too expensive for what you get. I guess if you are a sushi lover or just have to have tiny portions of french style 'meals' that cost $150 just for the presentation, then maybe you have a point. But I'll take some good ole Texas BBQ or a thick juicy slab of midwest beef any day Sorry if that offends of you liberal tofu eating PETA members... " travel more" You (we) HAVE to travel more. Traffic sucks so bad, we on the coast practically live in our cars. Then we feel the NEED to travel - away from the city - just to get away. " dress better" LOL. Have you been to Capital Hill or Fremont lately. " watch cooler movies" Do you (does he) mean the limitted release \ low budget \ foreign type films? Have at em... Most of us really don't mind missing out on the Gay and Lesbian film festival... "earn better salaries" We HAVE to to afford to live here. "meet more interesting people" LOL. Back to fremont and capital hill. "interesting" indeed.... " listen to better music" LOL " and know more about what's going on in the world." LOL. Yes you do. In your own little word that is... LOL. Point in case about the rose colored glasses....

LT's paste from the "Universal Press" obviously was crafted by someone sucking on a sour lollipop. It certainly makes me wonder what universe the writer (not necessarily LT) was from...
Anyone who says lefties or Kerry supporters "eat better" has never traveled or only dines in fast food joints, but then again Southern fast food is better overall than what we have around here.
As an avid food groupie, I will say that Southern cooking is hands-down superior to what we have in the Northwest, salmon, crab and oysters included. Food is also very good in New York City, but upstate New York, part of a blue state, I believe, is so abysmal that I'm going to pack a survival kit the next time I visit. Food in Minnesota and Wisconsin is barely past muster, and some of the dining experiences in northern Wisconsin, home of the pig's eye, require more beer than in available in the whole state-- I mean there is a reason that Wisconsinites drink a lot.
To settle any discussion about Southern food versus that is the secessionist left coast, I have only one thing to say:
"New Orleans."

Keith

Hey, AM-- If you lived in the South and can only recall "collard greens and burnt fish" then your time there was either a) spent in jail or b) spent with some really bad cooks. If you really like good food, then you missed out, and I feel very, very, VERY sorry for you. Peel 'em and eat 'em shrimp right off the boat from the Gulf will make normal people forget about any steak from the Midwest, and just because beef in the Midwest is good doesn't mean the folks there know how to cook it-- although I will give Wisconsin credit for their brats. Although the very best Midwest steak I've ever had came from a little steak house (Jake's?) in Tuscumbia, Alabama. It beat the stuff at Lawry's in Las Vegas or Ruth's Chris Steakhouse hands down. I better stop because I think I just gained five pounds thinking about Southern food.... Keith

Good idea.. Hijack this thread... You mention Ruths Chris steakhouse... Best tasting over priced meal of my life.. and I do mean over priced ( two people, one drink apiece, 138 dollars) And that was just a couple steaks and two side dishes. Can't wait to go back there.

Ditto on just about everything you said there AM. I lived in Savannah, Ga. for awhile and loved it but always found myself wanting some REAL seafood and thinking of the GPNW. Way to much deep fried food down there. They fry EVERYTHING and anything you could dream of. To tell you the truth not one thing from down there really stands out. Hush puppies? NO. Fried Okra? NO. Chitlins? A big HE!! NO. Ham hocks? What the heck is a ham hock anyway? One thing that does stand out though and that was those Georgia Peaches... Now those sure were sweet! Oh and Pecan Pie!

OK, Aunty M-- I concede especially about potlucks although you have to pick and choose (avoid Cub Scout potlucks and go to those by Episcopalians, IMHO)---- and you are right on the money with the crabs-- crab in the South is a waste of protein, calories and effort, especially soft shell. But I will lay money down on my comments of upstate New York and New Orleans (the only city other than Seattle where you can get good coffee nearly everywhere, lousy beer though).
As for the warmwater fish-- if you're talking species, you're dead wrong, and I'm willing to prove it (Did I hear cook-off?). If you're talking fish from warm, Southern freshwater, you're absolutely right-- with the exception of bluegill and crappie.

One thing that does stand out though and that was those Georgia Peaches... Now those sure were sweet! A BIG on that statement PM! I lived in Atlanta for a while in the mid 80's and I came awful close to 'harvesting' one, but the crop was so bountiful that I spent all my time sampling it... tryin' to pick the right one!

Salt Many a good time in Hotlanta. The perimeter, Buckhead, Peachtree St.... Oh the memories, you could almost call me a migrant worker for all the peaches I was pickin'. There were a few sour one's though, a few that were a little softer than others and there were those ones had been handled a little more than the others... Also did some picking in Athen's at the UG right when R.E.M came outta there. Crazy, crazy, crazy... Still got some of my best friends living/working in Atlanta. I hear from them about once a week trying to get me to move down there. Probably run into a little trouble if that was to happen

Georgia... Yep... 2 day pass from Ft Benning. Made it at least 6 blocks from base... Columbus. Drank to much to remember any food. Georgia peaches would have nothing to do with us.. and hookers would not leave us alone.. On second day we pretty much beat each other up.. went back to base with 2 day hangovers...
My two real days in public in the south.
