Going to bank it this weekend in Ilwaco with the wife. She finally broke down and let me buy her her first full-year fishing licence ever. I was planning to do a surf-perch (sea bass?) set up with sand shrimp.

Anyone know if/where there's good jetty fishing, or if I should head over to the beach?

Fantastic jetty fishing there...when it is open for salmon, it is an excellent bet...plus, the rockfish are fairly easy pickin's, and there are plenty of lingcod right at your feet, too.

I'd skip the beach and go straight for the rocks!

The jetty there, however, is not a place for kids or people not good on their feet...it's a pretty steep and nasty one, so far as jetties go.

Fish on...

Todd

Will sand shrimp suffice? It's always been my go-to.

As I dont possess those mega-rods that surf perch folks use, I was going to use my steelhead/salmon/sturgeon gear.

Is there a recommended # test or rod strength minimum I should be aware of?

Fish the channel side for the cod family, and the ocean side in the surf for perch. sand shrimp or razor clam necks for the perch, and jigs for the bass and lingcod. the rocks are unforgiving when it comes to gear.

I use either rubber jigs, of which you will lose a ton, or float and herring, of which you will also lose a ton, but not as many as you will rubber jigs!

I've also caught rockfish in there casting crankbaits.

NWP nailed it on the locations...and I'll add "salmon" to the channel-side list, if it's open. On the beach side you will also find that many of your "bites" are immature Dungeness crabs, which seem to think sandshrimp and clam necks make excellent meals.

Fish on...
