Of course, $2k a month isn't bad if you're making a killing on tips, Scott ;\)

I make a killing in tips and do considerably better then 2k in wages, most lodges in the area I fish start at 3K to 4K plus tips with room and board included.

It's not a get rich plan by any means. What I'm offering is the chance to fish the finest King & Coho fishery in SW Alaska.
The person who wants the job is not in it for the money, yet the opportunity for a free trip of a lifetime, with a $2000 bonus every month.

Ak kings,

Where is waterfall AK? What is the fishing like? Saltwater or Fresh?

15 miles south of Craig on P.O.W. Is., saltwater fishing that rivals Sitka.

Saltwater fishing and open waters are worth a good deal more money than a river guide.

Our guides don't have to work very hard to hook 150 kings a day. It is not uncommon to have three guys hook 200 in 8 hours. If we used eggs, it would be even better. Most of our fish are caught on spinners.

Kevin, you may not have to work hard to catch em, but releasing and handling 150+ kings a day is a hell of alot of work. Do you have camp hands, or fish cleaners? During silver or sockeye season, cleaning fish could put hours on your day. I spent 12 years guiding in the Kuskokwim, Bristol Bay, Alaska peninsula areas, even on your lovely Togiak river at a Mission Lodge outcamp. I would say the experience was priceless, yet at times seemed like hell.

Bugs are a factor in almost every river fishery in Alaska. There is a 5 fish annual limit on kings for each person, so cleaning fish is not an issue. If someone is worried about how many fish they ahve to clean, maybe they are not cut out for the job. Releasing is part of any fishery in Alaska.
It's funny to hear how people make excuses for how tough a job can be. It's onlt s tough as you make it. Guiding is not for everyone, surley not for a lazy man. No matter how you look at things, work is still a 4 letter word.

Kevin,

Gilly is not making excuses for how tough a job guiding in Alaska is... He did the job for many years, and is trying to add a dose of realism to the dream job you've described. Personally I think it's in your best interests to have an employee that understands that there is hard work involved, so that you don't end up with some pansy that withers after the first 14 hour day.

Good luck.

That is the reason for talking with several fisherman rather than hiring the first guy who raises his hand. It's very hard work, as well as very rewarding. Thanks for those who replied. We have a few good guys to pick from now.

Kevin, glad to hear you found some possible guides. This is what kept me coming back for more and more. A good Oct. morning on the Naknek with my good friend Clayton.

This has always been something of a dream of mine. I would like to spend a season up in Alaska working at a camp. My problem is that I have never been there ( how ya going to show other people what you don't know) Am I to old for this stuff ??? seems like most guides are young up there.

One year I would like to do it, so I can see what its all about. Everytime I think I want to head to Alaska for a trip I wind up in Canada instead as Steelhead are what yanks my crank.

A guy can dream ?? right ??

We had a large turnover of guides last season and ended up with 10 rookies, 1 was 60 years old and quite possibly the best of the bunch. Also had a couple guys in there 50's that did well.
