What do you guys do for about 20ft of yellow line, not my pots, right in the middle of the trolling lane?

I was thinking about calling the owner, but saw no number on the bouy. Now, thinking about going over and just clipping on a line wieght where the line starts floating across the water.

It would be horrible to wrap all that line around a propeller.

Liner weight and a note in a ziploc. I almos hit one last week that had to have at least 60' of line on the surface. I shortened it up (with a knot) and then luckily ran into the owner about an hour later and informed them of the virtues of line weights and the hazards of floating line and props. They had no clue. Hope they listened.

That drives me crazy! I see it often on Hood Canal. If it were in the trolling lane I'd certainly try to at least shrten it by tying a loop in it or line weight it if you have extras.
Another wierd thing is flags used on crab pot buoys - Last summer I had a guy use a flag on the top of his pot - A red DIVE flag with a white stripe (indicating divers were in the area). He set in next to my dock. So after I'd been out fishing when I pulled up towards the dock in the boat I stopped and drifted nearby trying to figure out if divers were nearby (didn't want to chop anyone up with my Mercury 100 outboard y'know)! I putt-putted and tied up and when the crabber returend I informed he should change his flag - politely.
I think some folks don't always think things through, or just don't realize their mistakes - like the line you saw floating across the water in the trolling lanes.

Call up the WDFW and tell them to remove the pot.

I thought all pots had to be marked, etc.

If they won't come out and remove it, ask them what can can or should do about it.

Another vote for a line weight and note. Shortening the rope would be my second choice. If you do that, make sure you leave enough line so that the float is still on top when the high tide comes in. Hopefully, they'll get a clue.

I thought you had to have leaded line when using a crab pot.

A note is the key. People respond well to that type of thing and seem to remedy the situation quickly. Most guys dont want to be seem stupid and might have just forgot or had something happen to their snap weight. I know that you dont get far with most people by telling them how dumb they are and depending on who it is(I know a lot of people on the canal) can escalate a situation quickly. Just a please sink this line, I almost caught it in my prop. If you see the same pot again with the line stretched out, call the warden and have it removed.

The note idea sounds nice. If the note doesn't cut the mustard use something sharp.

Thanks for the replies.

I left this morning with line weights. As the fog was lifting I saw the owners of the pots, and talked with them. They had line weights but only set them couple of feet away from the floats. They set the weights further down the line and all was well.

Thanks again for the tips. If I add a line weight to someones' gear I'll be sure to put a note in a ziplock to let them know.
