I'm not sure why people are still wondering, but to make it clear, again...the fish is not a Halloween trick, or an April Fool's joke six months early...it really did have one egg skein and one milt sac.

Fish on...

I don't think it matters that it was a hatchery fish. Genetic imperfections/mutations are going to happen in all species.
A once in a lifetime catch Todd, pretty cool.

Did you get a full body shot or a good head shot?

Would be interesting to see what the fish looked like on the outside. I would have bet it looked like a hen.

Most critters are pre-programmed to be female on the outside by default. When that Y-chromosome kicks in during sexual development in the embyonic stage, the critter eventually takes on male characteristics. A developmental failure at that point would render a genetically male critter to become female. The biologic explanation for the disparity between external features and gonads is either deficient testosterone production or relative testosterone resistance at the tissue level.

This happens in humans as well... a condition called testicular feminization. Kid grows up totally female, and when they become teens, they look quite girly.... all female parts on the outside... just kinda small in the boobs hips and butts department. First clue that there is a problem is they NEVER get a period. Usually a very devastating revelation for all the family.

Very efficient fish, can do both tasks without a mate!
Got to be something good about that.

It probably looked more like a hen than a buck, but it mostly just looked like a small steelhead...there was a little lighthearted contention about whether or not it was a buck or a hen, I wish I would have cleaned it right there on the riverbank while there were others around to see it, too.

Jason, no problem with the removal...hatchery fish, when open...bonk!

Jimmy sent me a nice little care package of worms today...very nice!

Fish on...

Todd

I got a box today myself, I am looking for a Mad River Worm hat. I need to talk him into making some, plenty of Fish Pills swag, time for some worm swag.

blue water I do know in humans that is the case. We all start as female as said. If this is the case in other specie I don't know but would guess its the same.

I kinda like the "further evolve" aspect of becoming male.

Todd, a memorable catch. Definitely not your common, every-day fish.

I don't think this is very strange. I would wager that fish had neither viable eggs nor viable milt. Most hermaphrodites cannot reproduce from what I have read. Ever typed "doe with antlers" into Google? Click Here
