7th day on the wagon, and it's all mental from here.

Here's What I'm going to miss most about my dear old friend Mr. Grizzly. LOADING up, prior to wading out into a run.

All the employees where I work were sent an email notice this last week stating that beginning June of 2008 the company property will be 100% tobacco free.
No smoking, no chewing. Nothing. Ouch.
There's going to be a lot of grumpy people there when that happens. Typically your too far from the property boundaries to leave for a smoke. You'll just have to wait til you leave at the end of the day. Or on your lunch break if your so inclined to go to that much trouble for a smoke.

Good luck quitting....I'm next.....

Thanks Rafterman, but I'm not quitting. This is my 4th time abstaining from tobacca in 20 years. My longest is 7 years. I kind of like the withdrawals from abstaining cold turkey. Anyway just like an Alcoholic, one day at a time. Speaking of Alcohol, I can't believe I didn't pick up a freaking bottle for Christmas. Go figure.

Funny, I still have booze left over from last Christmas. A full 1/5 of Crown Royal and a full 1/5 of Captain Morgan. And at least a 1/2 full half gallon of Absolute vodka.

Want a shot?

Do I want a shot of Crown Royal? LMFAO, Hell I just opened my old can of chew and took three big sniffs to get my mind off your offer! Now I'm drinking wine from what's left over from smoking. Do I want a shot?

The Magicfly has a weak spot for CR.

4 years off the tobacco for me. Patch worked great....2nd time around.

If I would have been smoking, at least the dung wouldn't have smelled so strong on my waders.

I quit drinking over 12 years ago. It's hard. Cigs were a cinch. I really wanted to quit so it was pretty easy. Good on you.

Good for all you who have dropped your tobacco/drinking habits and gone sober. More power to you...

My grandpa quit the cigs cold turkey when his wife for over 30 years died of lung cancer.. (they smoked for as long as they were together)

Good luck to all you...

AA,

I've read a couple of times now that for many, it's easier to quit heroin than it is to quit tobacco. That gives some perspective to the difficulty people have giving up cigarettes.

Heroin withdrawal and frankly, alcohol DT's can kill a person. Quitting cigarettes will not. Getting off narcotics is much more difficult. I did it cold turkey. It's not that hard, and I smoked for years. Just do it and quit destroying yourselves. No excuses. Because to say that it's hard is a cop out. How hard will it be for your loved ones to watch you die from the abuse you are inflicting on your body? I don't but it. And I was a hard running mo fo in my earlier days. ANYONE can make life changes, but you have to be ready to take some actions to the contrary.

Try an extended period of incarceration for your addiction blues. Cured me off MethAmp and smoking. Started smoking the day I got released but haven't touched the sshprack in over 8 years. Took 3 months inside to get that wicked [censored] out of my system and finally think straight but once clarity came back it all made sense. [censored] cops and [censored] the prisons. To avoid both it takes sobriety. I still drink a lot of beer but have no desire to indulge that other side of life.
Good luck MF on your fight with nicotine.

The best way to quit something, is TRULY convince yourself that you HATE it with a passion... Dwell on the negative side of things... Up North this summer I took my last pack of cigarettes and literally just about chain smoked them one night... woke up with a bad sore throat and stumbled around looking for the cat that shi.t in my mouth overnight... I haven't had even the slightest bit of desire since... I won't lie, I have a chew now and then just more or less for something to do, but you won't be able to quit if you actually miss it and enjoy it...Just food for thought!

It has ruined more than just his life. Breaking an addiction is hard people who do provide a hopeful example for the others. I told him if others can do it (quit), so can you, you just took the wrong road, now get on the right one, but he didn't hear me.

Best thing is refuse to start, refuse to become addicted, and if you are break it as soon as possible, nothing should have that kind of control over a person.

I know someone who quit nicotine by putting $5.00 in a large clear jar everyday. Just looking at the $ made them not want to smoke, at the 1 year anniversary they went to Hawaii, with extra $$$ to spend.

That's sad man. What the system fails to realize is that these people have a disease and need help. I've seen a lot of good people lose everything and have seen people with nothing get everything back and thn some. There's always hope.

I have a love it and leave it relationship with the chew. I can go to work for 40 or more days on the tugs and not even have a chew or really even miss it but, as soon as I get on the river or get a rod in my hand I love to have that pinch or big ol' burl between the lower lip and gums. There are some products out of Sweden right now that are being touted as cancer free. They are basically small pouches that are extremely strong and surprisingly flavorful and inexpensive. Just google Swedish snoos and check em' out yourselfs. Happy New Year Everyone! -TBJ

Congratulations to everyone out there that has kicked a difficult habit!

I am also battling the Copenhagen demons. On my 4th day now, and the dizzy/spaced-out feeling from nicotene withdrawal is starting to subside. Trying to quit cold turkey. The terrible heartburn is what finally got me to attempt quitting. The thought of esophagus cancer freaks me out.

Finished my last pack two nights ago. And have been at the gym the last two days.

Went Skiing back around Xmas and found out ive become a total schlub. Only made 4 runs before my legs were jello and I was beat. I have 32 inch toothpicks holding up 200 lbs of beerbelly.

The hard part is when alcohol touches my lips I start getting the Nic-fits and also I have zero patience right now.

Had poker night with the boys last night and I chipped a little. Hard to quit when drinking a few beers and others are chewing around you.
But, I'm not discouraged.
FYI a few beers, the patch and a chew does not make for a good time. Thought I was going to hurl. \:D

Oh yeah, took 3rd out of 18 guys \:D \:D

You guys are making me think. I went to the doctors recently he suggested that I quit now or start getting my house in order....lots of arrows in his quiver, lung cancer, throat cancer, emphysema , high blood pressure congestive heart failure. Just over all shorter life and a painful death that your family will carry with you for ever. When I last quit for 2 years. I used to envision myself in a hospital bed telling my family I was dying from smoking..... ie. stupidity, I have another smokers line witch I carry with me. " Anyone can quit smoking, it takes a real man to stand up to cancer" I will join the crowd here and keep you informed of my progress like it or not you can be my support group.

I watched a good friend die of tongue cancer.

Honestly, if you are a smoker/chewer, and you get tongue cancer, just kill yourself the day you find out.

You are way better off that way. Honestly. I've witnessed Hell on Earth.

But hey, what do I know?

Enjoy that cig or chew.

True.

You're not going to live forever, but you can put the odds in your favor as to how, or how not, you are going to die.

There's no guarantee that you won't/can't get tongue cancer as a non-smoker or chewer. The odds state you will win the lottery first, though.

The odds go up if you chew, smoke, drink, don't exercise, partake in questionable lifestyles, etc.

Keep-em sick, treat the symtom not the cause, pharmicudical follies: I won't be milked of my last cent like the hundreds of dieing and soon to be dead.

Most Americans could treat themselves by getting off their fat asses and engaging in an active lifestyle, but it's easier to wait in line for a perscription and take out life insurance to cover their morgaged up the ass lifestyles. Fuc% the system.

for those of you trying to quit, the recidivism rate for tobacco/nicotine is about 96% and about 95% for heroin. When science discovered how our nervous system works in conjunction with our muscles, they named the receptor sites "nicotinic receptors". That's why it's so damn hard to quit.

And now for soapbox time: the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 420,000 people die in the U.S. each year from American Tobacco products. They also put alcohol deaths at 110,000 a year which does not include traffic deaths. Take Sol's advice, hit the fish whistle.

So back to the first post...are you still holding out, Magicfly?

I'm happy to report that this is day 8 with no Copenhagen. The challenging times are first thing in the morning or after a good meal. But the desire is starting to go away. It's hard to break a 20+ year habit, but in the end it will be worth it.

Stam - you give good advice. Stay away from friends that dip. Plus, the extra money I won't be spending on Cope is a bonus. Even at the Rez, it's around $4 per can. Which adds up to over $1,000 a year at my previous user rate. Could buy a lot of great fishing gear or even fly to Alaska for a trip.

I appreciate the comments on this topic. It has certainly helped me so far. Thanks for the support.

Like fishrmn, I to want to thank everyone for their support.

But something happened yesterday, and I'm not sure if I'm still on the wagon. While I was making a drink I noticed my old can in the fridge. Well one thing lead to another, and before I knew what was going on I had my nose buried in that gosh darn can. I don't think any got in my mouth, but I can't be certain. Other than that I'm still hanging in there. Good luck everybody.

By the way in the last 5 weeks I've gained 15 pds.

Quick - throw away the old can in the fridge!

You know what, I think I've gained some weight too. Not sure if that is from quitting dip or because I ate like a complete pig during the holidays.

At any rate, I'm headed into day 21 tomorrow. I think I've almost got this thing beat. Today was the hardest as it was the first time fishing since I quit. I can't recall the last time I fished without a big dip in. But it is possible.

To those of you out there who have never had an addiction to anything, or have never had to quit anything, you may not quite understand what it's like and wonder what the big deal is. But those who have dealt with them completely understand.

Great job and best of luck to everyone on your continued battles. Thanks again to my support group.

Day 21 tomorrow for me as well. I too found it hard to get the first one in the morning out of my head.
To be honest, I've chipped a few times, but the last time I quit, I did the same and was off it for 3 years or so, before I started back up.

The extra cash is coming in handy too \:D I had me a can a day problem going and usually paid 7-8 bucks a can. Do the math...... YIKES !!!

Good job to those kicking the habit

Congrats on the sobriety Jaba.

Nicotine & alcahol still cheaper than women \:D

I estimate my divorce has cost me over $350 K and still counting.

So I am 5 days without a chew, and wanted to know how many of you who tried to quit when this was posted were successful?
I had quit for 4 years and like an idiot started up again a few years ago. Now that I have kids there is a new motivation to quit for good. I just can't imagine fishing without a chew.

I'm an ex 2 pack a day WITH dip kind of guy and I quit. It's all mind over matter. The new nicorete lozenges worked great for the big urges.

Those and a crap ton of sunflower seeds and lollipops. But it is extremely hard to fish without a dip...sooooooo tough...but it does get better. Best of luck fighting the good fight...

Last September I finished a pack of smokes...and never bought another one. Haven't had a puff, or a dip, or a plug since then.

Having the lady in my avatar not being a smoker, and not liking being around a smoker, was, to say the least, a pretty good motivator wink

Fish on...

I quit cigarettes last year using the three step patches and occassionally the gum.
Fishing without is by far the hardest part.

The good: My lungs feel great and no coughing.
The bad: Was like learning to breath all over again, tired all of the time, weight gain, time drags....all known side effects of withdrawal according to the Doc.

Well, if you get pregnant, you'll just have to give up drinkin' for a few months.
Don't know who'd want to phluck ya, though.

wink

17yrs of chew to smokes to chew again. Rinse and repeat. Picked it up as a young ball player and carried it through my college playing days.

I was whistling through about a can of GRIZZ a day until 10 weeks ago.

Quit cold turkey and haven't looked back.

I still jones for a snoose, or at least a drag off a cig,......but I think about it less and less.

2packs+ a day for 30 years. If you smoke you can not get a kidney transplant, so quit or die. I used bupuiron , gum , and what really helped the most was sucking/biting on a cherry pit.

Quit date 5/30/09

GRIZZ would be reason enough to quit for me. I was going through almost 2 cans a day in Afghanistan and a fresh dip of Copenhagen was what I looked forward to through out the day. Those days when all I had was Grizz were some of my worst days.

10+yrs on the Cope until it became somewhere near $7.00/can.

It became hard to justify a $200/month chew habit. Switched to Grizz around 3-4yrs ago at about $3.25/can I think, wasn't all that bad.

Glad I quit. The wife doesn't complain about finding spitters left in every nook and cranny anymore and that's a-ok by me. Not to mention I now have extra duckets to blow on fishing gear grin

Yeah I had to buy a can of Cope out in town a couple of weeks and about crapped myself at the price, thank god Cope is only 3.25 on base.
