Steve Carson's 'Outdoors' column: DFG writes nearly 500 salmon fishing citations on Feather River

The Butte County Fish and Game Commission held its February meeting on Monday night in Chico. Agenda items included a warden's report, with Chico Department of Fish and Game warden Chad Alexander doing a PowerPoint presentation on Feather River salmon snaggers.

The presentation included video footage of a group of nine repeat offenders and close-up views of their snagging gear. According to Alexander, nearly 500 salmon fishing citations were written on the Feather this season.

Other violations shown included deer-baiting cases where deer hunters had set out alfalfa bales, sweet cob corn, apples and even a salt lick. Another deer poacher illegally shot a deer while he was out cutting a Christmas tree. Several poaching cases also yielded large quantities of drugs and illegal guns when arrests were finally made.

where is this because it is legal to bait deer elk and cougar in the state of wa. got it from the gammies mouth when he caught a friend he thought it was elegal but the gamie laughed at us and told us the rule

I can easily see 500 citations on the Feather.

Last year I saw a couple guys from WA that came down to check out the Feather because of what they had heard.

I felt really bad for the guys.

I'm sure that they didn't find what they were expecting.

Showed up with good eggs and good intentions only to be met by long leaders and "flossing techniques"...must have needed a mustache ride to ease their disappointment.

Would not mind seeing more enforcement arround here myself either. Watched nates get bonked last year and never seen one gammie after the hatchery brats were gone. This time of year they can not all say they are busy with the hunters either like i've heard them say before.
