Just finished reading The General's piece in STS and I must say it is one of the finest pieces of writing I have read in years. He has been missed in the pages of STS. Glad to see him back although the topic is a bit disheartening.

That was a great article, but it will surely piss off some folks. So be it.

Ah Dave, you know as well as anyone that a writer has to be entertaining if not a bit controversial these days if he/she is going to sell any articles. Sometimes the truth hurts.

BTW, I'm glad you wrote a bit on the effects of hatcheries on wild fish and the spillway weir was interesting as well although it is a bit too little, too late for some Snake River species.

Guess I'll have to wait with all the others who haven't gotten the latest issue in the mail yet.

It is an awesome article, and I hope it pisses some people off enough to realize what WE are doing to some of our fisheries.

The part that may cause some discussion is the claim that many side drifters kill an inordinate amount of smolts and other than the guy on the oars, that all one has to do to be a good side drifter is hold the rod and not drool too much.

i've had that discussion with him a few times and i completely agree. side drifting, in my opinion, is about as far from actual steelheading as it gets.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

And the fly-guy sez "bait fishing is about as far from actual steelheading........."

And the drift fisher sez "float fishing is about as far from actual steelheading.........."

And the float fisher sez "plug-pulling is about as far from actual steelheading.........."

Is there a book the cool kids read that illustrates the difference between "actual" steelheading and just steelheading? I want to make sure I'm in the cool group.
