In spite of the B. S. the logging companies keep telling us about how great the Forest and Fish deal is. The forests are getting raped with very little concern for environmental effects. The required set backs are often as little as 50 feet and they continue to clear cut steep slopes.

That picture is sad.Not against logging at all just need to leave larger buffer zones.like 100' to 150' along rivers and streams.Good luck,

People are caught poaching trees periodically as well.

I expect that logging/mining/polluting is intensifying the closer the Bush admininstration is to leaving office. Get it in now before there's a new, less friendly, sheriff.

You should be able to pull up any Forest practices permit from the DNR website.

In washington state the buffer for any fish bearing stream is 150 ft. I beleive it is suppost to go to 300 in the next couple years.

Hey Dave, I talked to my friend in the DNR and he looked at the picture and doesnt recognize the spot. He said he would need to know the Township, Range, and section this was taking place in. He did say that from the picture it looks like it could be too close to the river but said the distance may be decieving in the picture, how far away from the river is this taking place by your best estimate?

Dave, what is the location? This is also in my backyard. 1/2 mile to the chuck from the door. I would like to go take a look and perhaps some pictures.

You could watch the mud flow down before the logging in "decent" "normal" winter rain storm. Imagine now. What you cannot tell from the pic is just how steep that hillside is. It very well may be legal what they are doing, in fact, probably is. It's just when you see it for your own eyes, you immediately know the consequences of logging that whole hillside, legal or not, and it kinda makes a pit in your stomach, and you feel a helpless frustration throughout your body. Probably is legal, definately is not smart though if you have one concern for the river and it's inhabitants. I'm not against logging at all either, but ya gotta do things with thought and responsibility when it comes to such practices. We need logs, we don't need every log down to a buffer zone that should be greatly expanded. An area expansion of buffer zones around rivers and streams seems like an obvious neccesity to me. I am not against logging, I am against abusing a resource that has long term consequences for the short term small gain. Yeah, I know, no paragraphs in there, probably some spelling errors too.

He did agree with Pat, that most WA law states there must be a 150 ft buffer between logging and a fish bearing stream.

150 feet is nothing when you consider water running down a slope. 150 looks okay for tree cover for shade, but the 150' of trees won't be around long when the water starts heading down hill, on the steep slope, with less and less to slow it down. 150 feet on flat land near a stream I can see, still think it should be bigger, but, 150 on a slope is absolutely nothing. How is that 150 feet measured? Horizontally on a plane or would that 150 be just up the slope on the ground, if so that 150 is much less. You need more than just 150 feet of vegetation surrounding a river to provide the biology of insulation needed to protect what is in a river. A watershed is much more than what you see on the surface near a river bank. I'm no biologist, scientist, geologist, zoologist, I ain't even very smart, but I'm not dumb enough to know that logging a steep hillside down to a river is just plain idiotict, selfish, and thoughtless. Just my stupid unhumble opinion without scientific fact.

Addicted: I have some folks willing to look into this but need some exact location details. Please PM me with all the details you can come up with to help tell the investigators exactly where the clear cut is.
