I'm looking at getting a new sedan, most likely a 4 door and am looking somewhere between 13-20k and am wondering if you all have any suggestions for a good sedan with a BIG trunk. That's a big priority. I need it to fit my fishing gear when I'm not driving the big SUV, and I need to be able to hold a few golf clubs and what not...Space back there is a big issue.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good sedan? Audi, Acura, Honda, Saab, ...???
I'm just in the browsing process now but want something that has good gas mileage, is comfortable for folks in the back and has some good space in it...4wd would be nice...

What kind of boat did you end up buying Fish Hunter?

Still in the process of looking around...Something around 20', center console is about the route we are going. Already have a rig to tow that, so no worries about it. I just need a new sedan....I had a 2000 Accord but passed it down to my sister...

Subaru Legacy sedan. 4wd, roomy, plenty of trunk, and sport shift. Really nice.

Super reliable, decent mileage, good sized trunk and in your price range.
I bought a new one in 2003 for a work rig and better mileage than the fishing rig SUV. I can get a float tube in the trunk. The 4 banger has no problem cruising at 70 mph.
Approaching 100K with no problems other then routine service. It has 200K written all over it.

+1 on the Legacy. But it's not really a trunk, so if you're looking to move bodies it may not work for you.....

If you plan on driving any dirt/offroad to hit the rivers nothing beats an older subaru in the realm of sedans. City cars don't equal fishing cars.

I have an '87 Volvo wagon I paid $3500. for 6 years ago. I used it like a pick up when I was doing a remodel. I've had so full it's almost on the springs and it still rolls at freeway speeds. On the freeway, whether I'm going 45 or 75 it rides the same since it's heavy. The mileage is about 20 mpg. Minimal maintenance other than oil change. I have about 275000 miles on it. When I kill this one, I'm looking for another. Best rig I've ever had.

The lesbians are right about this one...hard to beat a Subaru...good mileage, AWD, 5 speed...get the Outback and you can even put a small pontoon boat on top.

Fish on...

Toyotas have the best resale value. They are solid cars, but you pay a lot for them. If you are looking for a sedan, the Camry is it. I drive a Corolla, it is a nerdy car, but I get about 35 mpg, and since I commute with 2 other guys, I say I get 100 mpg to and from work (again nerdy).

I had a Corolla before this one that I wrecked while looking at a Mapquest printout (I steel feel like a jackass about that). I was really impressed with the valuation of it by the insurance people. The car was totaled, but I was able to chip in $2K extra and got one with only 600 miles on it with the insurance money. I was flabbergasted when they told me I would get 10.5K for a car I had owned for 3 years, and paid $14 for.

My wife has the 2004 (not 2004+) Volvo S40. It's a 4 door, big trunk and Turbo. Fast car.

Subaru!!!,
I've owned three of them in all in different generations and they have all been great. My parents have owned one for ten years and have never had one problem, not one.
The company my girlfriend works for owns an Outback with 320,000 miles and its still on it's original drivetrain.
The AWD is awesome, they are nearly as reliable as a Toyota, and if you get a wagon you can fit more crap in there then you can hope to imagine.

Thanks for the advice all...

the 4wd on those Subaru sedans are another important thing. I ski and would like to be able to have a car to take up to the mountains instead of borrowing pop's big suv...I like those subaru sedans, I'm not huge on the wagon/5 doors though...

If you're looking for a fishing/skiing vehicle, why would you consider a sedan vs. a wagon? You can actually sleep in the back of the wagon if you have to, not to mention bring twice as much gear as you can fit in a trunk and back seat...

I was never a wagon guy at all until we bought our first one seven years ago...we're on our second one, now, and when it's time for a new car, we'll likely get a third.

Salmo g. has the exact same car as ours, and he trailers his little sled around on it...I used to tow a utility trailer with our older one, though I haven't put a hitch on our new one yet...I probably will soon as it can get me to the river and back with my boat at 1/3 the cost of my big rig.

Fish on...

Todd

Did you HAVE to pass the 2000 Accord down to your sister?

If so, just buy another Accord. Arguably the best, most reliable, fuel efficient, longest lasting car made.

I still drive a 98 LX as my commuter car. Comin' up on 200K and all I've ever had to do is change the oil, brakes every 30,000 and a tune-up every 50,000. I'm gettin' 30+ mpg too.

Sister is a new driver, parents didn't want her to be driving anything nicer then that....She's already took a turn a little sharp outta a parking garage and messed up the side of it..

Todd: I guess I should take a look at those wagons...Some of those Subaru ones don't look all that goofy and are actually pretty slick....
