Even though I've had a TV for years, I'm glad that my pop-culture literacy quotient is low enough that I have no more than a vague idea what this discussion is about. I'm more curious about what percent of the American population even knows what this is about, let alone actually cares about it. Maybe a good gage would be comparison with NASCAR.

Imagine climbing into a cage with a highly conditioned athelete trained in boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, ju jitsu, and submission holds, who feels it's his moral responcibility to kill you and you have it.

Salmo do you have Versus? I ignored the mixed martial arts fighting until last year when I saw a match at a bud's house. While I'm no fanatic it is very cool.

I wrestled through junior high and high school. I went to states one year. The first time I saw this [censored] on tv I had instant respect. Heck we did 3 periods of 2 minutes or something like that and I remember being dead after each match. These guys go 3 rounds of 5 minutes (I think). Absolutely brutal. Those guys beat the tar out of each other. Give it a chance. As a one of my friends said "this will make boxing extinct".

Jens has been training a lot harder than usual and he's better than the last guy Faber fought, which went into the second round. It should be a good fight, but with MMA you never know.

I'm not a huge fanatic or anything either, but after watching a little bit it is pretty easy to get into. I mean the conditioning of the athletes is incredible, and I would say that as a general rule there is a lot less long term brain/CNS damage than there is from boxing. Probably because the fights a lot of the time end due to submission, and also the rounds are longer, where in boxing a guy gets beat to almost KO, then goes and sits down for a minute. Then goes back in and beat until almost KO, then sits down. Repeat

I will watch it when my kids aren't around, usually live-pause then speed through a few rounds for a half an hour or so. I make mental notes in case I ever get jumped by ninjas or something, I need to have some moves.

Got to go with Faber. It will end with one of his quick elbows to the head.

Don't overlook his grappling game, he's won his last couple bouts by submission.

If Versus is the old OLN, then I think I have that channel, but the only time I ever watched it was during the Tour de France a few times. As I was explaining to the guys I was making a long drive with today, I'm not much into watching sports. I'd rather play or do something, even if I do it badly, than watch someone else do it really well.

When I was a small kid I thought wrestling (TV "rasslin'") was really cool. Once I learned it was fake, I completely lost interest. I was pretty impressed with boxing for its conditioning and skill - until I learned it causes brain damage. I don't think something qualifies as sport if one of the means of winning includes brain damage to the opponent. It just doesn't meet the test of intelligence that should be part of any sport. So if the point of MMA is having the moral responsibility to kill one's opponent, as Sol put it, then I guess I don't have any use for it. That sort of reminds me of the Roman gladiators, who killed each other to provide entertainment and thrills for the masses. This occurred at the peak of the Roman Empire, shortly before it began to fail, not that there's any correlation to American society.

I'll probably stick with basketball.

I really don't think Pulver has a big shot at winning. My favorite comment about Fabor last night by a commentator that oversaw one of his wins was, "A couple of his moves looked like something from the Matrix."

the torres fight is the best one so far tonight

Man this sucks I got dish network and cant find the fight on anywhere. I heard the Kimbo Slice fight was a big let down.-T

its on VS or versus, the torres/ maeda fight was KILLER.

Fight got stopped near the end of the second round, and it shouldn't have been...Slice almost got his ass handed to him a couple of times, and then I think he got a really generous call on a TKO...other dude actually popped the ref in the head when he stopped the fight.
