Wow. I'm surprised not just that I'd be taken for a thief, but a thief stupid enough to make my get away in a drift boat with only Modrow Bridge, or Camp Kalama as my 'escape' routes. I wasn't rowing hard for the take out when the guy caught up to me. We were on anchor, and in sight of the road. There's not much to the story. I ran across a couple of rods on a grassy bar in the middle of the river, in a spot that at the current river level I'd only expect a DB to pull up on, and no boat around.

Anyways, I sent a PM to 'zachery' which I'll share here since it explains the rest of what happened. I'd welcome a call from the owner of the rods, I am sorry for causing him troubles.

Zach,

I didn't get a chance to talk with your friend before he left with his rods. We pulled the boat over on that little gravel bar that sits upstream of schoolhouse hole to fish the side channel. We didn't see the gear until we pulled the boat over, and not because it wasn't visible, but because it's the last place you'd expect to see gear. After we hung out and fished the side channel for about 20 minutes I asked my friend what should we do with the gear since the closest guys were well upstream and in possesion of their gear. He said, throw the rods in the boat and we'll drop them off at Mahfey's when we do the turn around from Modrow. We figured someone had done a boat stop and left their gear. That someone had waded out their to leave two rods wasn't really a consideration we had.

We were on anchor when your friend caught up to us. It wasn't a grab and haul ass out-of-their kind of thing. I feel bad about this, but if anyone thinks my intention was to steal someones rods it just isn't so. I was in the driftboat. There's only 2 places downstream to take out...Modrow, and Camp Kalama.

I wish I had had the chance to talk with your friend before he left. If you would pass this message along I would appreciate it. Tell him I'm sorry for giving him an ulcer.

Vince

Way to come back here and give your side of the story. There's always 3 sides to a story.

The thing I feel worst about is that he recognized me, and told me he liked my line testing article. Seemed like a really nice guy. Then I row downstream and make off with his rods...

I had to register and log in to post this but I will back up my friend who is a doctor and had the rods stolen. My buddy left the rods in the middle of the river on the island that was very very difficult to get to at this water level. He will admit that he should not have left them there but was closely watching all the fisherman in the area. The only way that someone would have taken the rods is if they had risked going out to the island or by boat. He was obviously watching every boat going by and even talked to the one who took the rods. IT WAS NO ACCIDENT and HE HAD NO INTENTION OF RETURNING THE RODS. Reason behind that is that he only took the rods and not the bait box, fish on a stringer, or the sweater that were right there also. If he was such a good samaratain then he would have grabbed all of the gear to return it. Pretty difficult to explain why he chose to take the $400 worth of rods and not the other belongings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Curious as to why you left the rest of the gear.

MF,

I'm not sure why, but that was kind of funny. I'm going to bed now. Fishing after working all night makes me punch drunk.

Zachery, you have my ph number. You're friend can call me anytime. I need to apologize for ruining his day of fishing.

The guy didn't press charges for a reason, probably after hearing what happened. I have an extremely hard time thinking that even though a group of buddies on here would like to further Vince's embarrassment, he would steal someone's gear. Do you really believe that? He is here apologizing and asking for the guy to call him.

syko, I'm sure Vince was talking about magicflys comment about signing his magazine when he said it was kinda funny. Also you said in your post that the spot your friend left his gear was very, very hard to get to,good reason for vhawk to think someone in a boat might have left them. Don't know about the sweater and bait box but about the fish, maybe they already had their limits and didn't want to take a chance with having more fish than legal, really officer we found this fish and we were going to drop it off at the store hoping the owner would claim it. I don't know vhawk other than what he has posted and seeing him at solfly but he seemed to be a good man. Not suprised at how quick some of you regulars are to have your fist meet their nose without hearing their side of the story first . Rod

Jeez guys, think about this. Vince volunteers his time with terminal kids. Seems to go out of his way to help others, even those he doesn't know personally. Offered a lot on this board while he was posting here. Doesn't have a history of kleptomania (at least that I know of).

It's obvious there are a few personal issues with other board members, but unless there's more to this story I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Just my .02 - this place is sounding more like the evil Piscatorial Inquisition evil lately.

Thats what I was referring to when I wrote "thats kind of funny".

Fish4brains was right. I did make the wrong call. As far as why no charges were pressed, I don't know exactly what the conversation between the sheriff and the rod owner was, but when the sheriff asked me where I found the rods, and I replied "on a small bar in the middle of the river". He confirmed that with the owner, and then called on the radio "cancel back up. there was reason to believe the rods were abandoned." The entire time spent on that contact with LE was about 7 to 10 minutes.

Stuff like this is sucking the energy out of me. I'm withdrawing from any further fisheries related community activity, and charitable activity. I can better spend those 3 weeks a year fishing for myself, or working overtime. Since my community involvement has no reflection on my character I'm thinking why bother. My free time is worth a lot more than a pair of rod and reels. I'll leave it to guys like Jake to make the world a better place.

Bye.

VHawk, hang in there man. Thanks for coming on the board and posting your thoughts. I have no idea why there is such animosity, people must have more time for the trivial than I do. Only met you once (down on the Nisko in Sept.), but got the feeling that you are one of the good ones. Keep your chin up and your shoulders back.....

My uncle taught me a valuable lesson some 30-years ago when fishing the rivers.

1) Never leave your things unattended at the river.
2) If you do find something, leave it alone.

Simple, but effective.

It's all good Vhawk. We stand behind you, we know your not going to jeopardize your reputation on a few rods and lose respect from fellow fishermen. Go catch some Chromers and post some pictures ,we enjoy your posts!

Vince,

You still have no explaination for not picking up the other belongings if you are indeed such a good samaratain? And as much as you may try to come up with something to make yourself look good here I am not sure that you will be able to. You have probably been thinking about it for sometime now. If you had a good reason, you would have posted it last night.

Bent Rod,
Vhawk did not have any fish at the time.

To all else who choose to remain ignorant,
You can be whoever you want to be on the internet. I have found that out first hand. Just because someone portrays themselves one way here does not mean that they are that way. It is not that hard to make yourself look good here on the internet. My posting here is nothing more than an honest warning to the fishing community.
