Palomar knot works the best for me. You will love the braided line. Use a good swivel clip prior to the ball or planer.

I've been told that the auto stop on downriggers will not work with braided line. Has anyone had this kind of problem?

You forgot about all the beer you'll need for your friend with the ball mold once that snaps, speaking of which I'm feeling kind of parched.... beer

Cannons need wire for the auto stop to work.

My scottys auto stop just fine with the braid. I have braid on one side and wire on the other and they fish just fine. The sway of each side is just about the same. I'll probably change the wire over to braid before winter blackmouth.

As a suggestion.... the palomer knot but with two (2) times through the eye will better serve you regarding break-offs caused by friction...

The site below tests various braid knots used for various purposes.. This site is for 20 lb braid but has a link to 50# at the bottom...

For the scottys use the red stoppers, Grass will make the others slide. I have been using the braid for over a year and really like it. just make sure you use the red stopper and it works better with two back to back. The other thing you have to watch out for is hitting the bottom to fast. if you do it will throw a wrap around the bottom of the spool and get tangled or cut. You can get it undone by hand, which you cant with wire. once wire is bent its done.

I use a uni knot on my downriggers with braid. I like the superline for fishing off the ball, but still like wire better for stacking shallow.

I have two scotty electrics. at the moment 1 has cable and the other has 150# braid. I used a Trilene knot to attach to the clip and run 12lb balls on both sides. I left a long tag on the knot to let the knot cinch up. Since I have put it on, the braided rigger has outfished the cable 2 to 1. Coincidence? I have noted that the braid has a lot more drag in the water and results in a lot more angle in the downrigger cable. So far I am pretty impressed with it. gonna get the other rigger spooled up with braid soon.

Starting my third season with braid on one downrigger. Like it a lot. A little more expensive up front, but I'm not replacing it as often as cable. I use the Scotty braid. Didn't have the red stoppers when I first put it on. The cable stoppers (yellow and black) worked okay but would slip some. The red ones don't slip. Will be putting braid on the other 'rigger soon.

I use the palomar knot for attaching the swivel. Re-tie it each year. I also strongly recommend the Gold Star snubbers between the ball and the braid/cable.
