I need to find someone with a good beer connection to help me out.

I want to get on someone's "short list" for the upcoming November release of the Deschutes Abyss.

It's damn near impossible to find any here in Seattle - even on the damn day that it's supposedly released.

IE, if you're at BottleWorks the second it opens on the day Abyss is out, the store is already "sold out".

Not like I want a couple of cases of the stuff (although that would kick ass), I'd just like to get a single case of the stuff.

Anyone help me out? Personal favor?

To those that know Abyss, you know what I'm talking about.

Feel free to PM or email me to keep it on the low-down, etc.

Here is what the Brewery had to say about it:

Pours dark coffee color to black with loads of dense tan head. Sticky lacing on the glass when the head finally recedes.

Aroma is almost smoky, with hints of chocolate, a nuttiness similar to hazelnut, butterscotch or toffee.

Taste of bitter chocolate followed with a roasty flavor, nuts, vanilla, some residual sweetness and a little oak in the finish.

Mouthfeel is creamy and rich, with decent levels of carbonation to break up such a big brew. Finish is both sweet and bitter.

Great beer. This was our last bottle of about 8 or so we tried over the last 10 months or so. We've also had the pleasure of having this on tap. Terrific stuff.

***********

Damn...I'm not a beer drinker (or drinker, period) but that stuff sounds tasty!

Ouch.

I'd rather not have to....especially with NO guarantee that they would have any. The stuff sells out in seconds....if you're lucky to find it.

I *AM* willing to drive to Yakima or Ellenburger, though.

Gotta be *some* way for me to score a case of Abyss.

Come on, someone needs this Imperial Stout drinker out!

No thanks.

Not going to get raped over beer.

I'll pay retail prices, but that's it.

Besides, I want a case of the upcoming Nov 2008 released beer.

If you want the best beers, you MUST go to the source. You cant expect them to fall on your lap.

Make the pilgrimage to Bend. You'll be happy you did.

Another microbrew Mecca on the map is San Diego County. Home to the likes of Stone Brewing. The Seattle Area is falling away from the microbrew hall of fame.

There is a brewery in Everett, I think it's called Fat Boy and one of their brews is 9.3%. Maybe I'll have time to stop by there on Saturday--- it's maybe 10 minutes from my house.

How does Abyss compare to Obsidian stout? I've gotten out of touch with all the microbrews out there.

Update:

I purchased a case of the 2007 Abyss and hopefully will get a case of the 2008. Unfortunately, it's all down close the source. Ie, it's sitting in Bend, Or.

Any PP members heading down that way and want to make a beer delivery run for me, holler my way! All I gotta do is get it up to Stlhdr1's house in Vancouver, and I'm golden!

Mikespike - Abyss is an Imperial Stout. It's a meal, not a beer. IIf you even remotely enjoy Obsidian, you will flat out lose it over Abyss. Nothing compares.

If I were going to be executed tonight, my last meal request would be a bottle of Abyss.

Irie - I hear ya. I need to go to the Deschutes Brewery and pay my proper respects and homage. bow

The Merlot? Well Bucket, everytime I try to conjure up a visual of you with a delicate glass sipping on a fine wine in your meat hooks, it turns in a can of animal beer. Not that there is anything wrong with animal beer.

Maybe Tom at CM can get us some Abyss to sample.

the abyss is a kick you in the teeth beer that makes a guy ask "my i have another?" brewer knows of a place where the local yokals are in the dark about it. the beer store buys it by the cases expecting it to move and it just doesn't. so there it sits.

the 08 Abyss will not be released till mid Nov. i would suggest you guys do some research now on beer shops that carry obscure beers. specialty beer stores. or contact homebrew shops that also sell beer too. start putting your oders in now! beers like these are brewed according to requisted orders. sierra nevada's winter ale called "celebration". which by the is the BOMB! keep your eyes open for it. once the stores are out these kinds of beer thier done for the year. so if you find the Abyss buy as much as you can. buy the entire supply if you can afford it. i've heard of Abyss bottles on ebay for 75$ abottle.

brewer just had the 07 vintage of the abyss.... courtesy of my brewing buddy. this is a stout that is is so incredabley complex that in will change carracture with every taste. 1st. the chocolate malt is strong and pronounced. the foam head is of a scorched carmel appearence. dark yet inviting. the dark appearence is pure mid-evil. the carracture is very complex. it finishes with a strong annis black liquiris flavor as the beer temp ages. the alch. content is so extreme that brewer is pretty well phfucked! i givwe tho abisss ah dobbble fumbdz umphs wytf tw2 swirllz and eh 2 schnappps... bl...ah bbbl....ah. i erumend it... nuffed tiiped....

jerry in a huge stout such as the Abyss, the BUs' of 65 will not be strongly pronounced. a IPA very pronounced yes.... the Abyss has so much going on with it you won't even notice the 65 BUs.... plus at 11% alc. things will move fast. which by my post on sat, it will flat blow your doors clean off. wince the slurred post.

I stopped by Central Market in Mill Creek and they said that last year they got 10 cases of the Abyess and expect to get at least the same this year if not more. He said they would not sell a case, by the bottle only and would limit the amount a person could buy. It will probably be $9.99 a bottle. I bought a bottle of Dissident from Deshutes there at the same $9.99 and it was OK. Should be out in mid November.

I sent you a PM ColeyG......assuming you really won't consume a case of my Abyss.

Kinda makes you wonder what a case of Abyss would do to one's GI tract, let alone Alcohol Blood content level.

i was brewer at Bridgeport brewery for just over 5.5 years. bridgeport still does the ol'knuklehead, cept it's now just in draft form. the BP pub or the ale house on hawththorne is the only place to get it now.

it's not a seasonal anymore. since it's for the pub-alehouse only they do it like any other brew. it doesn't move real fast. so it might be brewed once a year.

BP is in P-Town. It's on the way for your road trip!

Lucky SOB. Be sure to take pee in the extra small pissers. They are too small for me to use, but I'll bet they seem pretty big to you.

Hey Bucket,
Would Leonetti go with Friday oatmeal?

Maybe a low key seasonal beer tasting, fish story and gear swap is in order with all the seasonals being brewed.

NA, I don't think the Leonetti would be a good fit with oatmeal. What do you think KK?
But yes I do believe your correct about a little gathering fer the tasting and BS would be a good idea. Add the BBQ and we'll have a great time! Anytime after the 10th of Nov is good fer me! Accually, my connection feel's he'll have my load of beer just after the 10th.

And since this is a beer thread, here is some truly important information, as well as a must have product (if you are an anal retentive, the-world-is-trying-to-screw-me kinda person)

Beware of the "short pour"

Gotta thank ColeyG and my source (on another board) for hooking me up with some beer. You guys ROCK! thumbs

Here's the end result of this successful quest. 1 case of the 2007 Abyss, 1 case of the 2008 Abyss (not officially released to the public yet) and 1 case of XX Porter.

I wonder how long it will be before Parker opens one of those bad boys and finds out I emptied them all and filled them back up with water?

Damn that was some good stuff. Made the drive home a lot more enjoyable smile

<GASP!>

Cold?????

You don't drink Imperial Porters or Imperial Stouts *cold*. Room temperature is perfect. Let the aromas and flavors do their thing. Don't freeze them in to submission.

You'd better just stick with the Patron.

That kid has got talent....if that's the kind of talent one is looking for.

Wow, I was not going for the "gay angle" at all, but now that you mention it, that guy could take on an elephant!

I hope this makes up for that "unclean feeling" grin
